fruiting chamber question
    #4542815 - 08/16/05 04:55 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

i recently made a fruiting chamber for my casings. i put perlite and water in the bottom of a rubbermaid container. i used water from the tub fossit. everytime i open it, it smells strongly of chlorine. my friend had setup the previous chambers and i can't remember if he used distilled water or not, but the others didn't smell like this. my question is, do you thin the casings will be ok if there is high chlorine in the water?

I suggest tasking it out of the tubs and washing them really good, and then replacing it with new perlite, and bottled water. While you clean it out, you can keep the casings or cakes in a saranwrap thing. <for lack of better terms>

firstly, you need to drain the water out of the perlite. perlite works much better for humidification if you soak it then drain it off and apply to the bottom of the tub. you are cutting back the surface area of the perlite by having it soaking in water, therefore decreasing the amount of evaporation from the perlite.

another problem with there being standing water in the tub is the nasty shit that it will eventually start growing. sure the 100% colonized cakes are somewhat contam resistant but why take any chances.

as for what kind of water you use, i have only ever used tap water to soak the perlite in and it is fine.

peace :mushroom2:

a rule of thumb, add 2 inches of water then 3 inches of perlite, you should be fine from there.

city water is usualy chlorinated, a 10 gallon fish tank filled with city water
will be chlorine free within 24 hours, it's nothing you should worry about
