A possible Onion Shuck/Skin substrate?
    #4542189 - 08/16/05 02:02 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I assume this wouldnt work, but I have been thinking about it lately. (Actually, I cant get mushrooms out of my mind since I started my first grow!)

I work on an Onion farm, and we grow lots of onions. I was curious if anyone thinks that the onion's shuck/crispy outer skin (or even the dried stems) could be used for a substrate? I know our onions went through testing at Cornell's labs, and came back with 2 thumbs up as far as their nutritional value is concerned... So, why woudlnt they be nutritious for the mushies too?

I'm partially kidding of course, but, considering the amounts of fresh, all the way to fully composed onion shuck I have available, I thought I might run this by a few of you experts.

So: A) Could they be used at all?
B) Could they be used for Cubes or Cyans?
C) Could they be used for other edibles/medicinal mushies?

I know onions have alot of sulphur compounds, and if they were used as a substrate, it would probably need to be PH balanced. Maybe besides Calcium Carbonate, I could use another additive to give the substrate some added kick/nutes? Shit, maybe nobody could even answer any of these questions. heh heh Agar? Mj?

Who wants me to just give it a shot for shits and giggles?? Wouldnt be too hard. I could go with dry shuck, and moisten it, and I could also go with half to totally decomposed shuck.

Thanks in advance. You guys always seem to have the right answers.

Well I assume as much. I did mention onions having a high sulphur content, which would probably mean you would have to use calcium carbonate. Or would that not work to fight the sulphur? I guess this is why I'm asking, as I dont know. Maybe the sulphur content drops when they decompose. I think I'll take some photos to show all of you. Maybe I'll take a test-run myself and see how they do. Maybe boiling the shucks will also take some of the sulphur away. I wouldnt exactly consider onion shuck a grain, but hey...you never know what might happen.
