Casing Materials. Will This Work?
    #4542140 - 08/16/05 01:48 PM (12 years, 4 days ago)

Here is my plan and I need to know if it will be okay to use. I plan on using sterilized 50/50 verm/compost manure as the bottom layer probably 1 inch thick. Then crumbled cakes for the middle layer composed of verm/compost manure/BRF. Then for the actual casing layer 60/40 verm/coco coir .25"-.5" that has been sterilized. Does this sound like a good plan?

If the moisture is right, great plan. Good luck.

Thanks. I assume the moisture level needs to be at field capacity, right?

No

Manure is a bulk substrate...you don't use it as casing layer material.

There is no need for a bottom casing layer.

Just spawn your colonized substrate into the composted manure...let that colonize then put a casing layer over it.

Okay so basically I prepare my manure/verm and after sterilizing and cooling I put it and a cake (in jars still) or two of colonized substrate into my glove box. Then I break up the cakes, mix them in with the manure/verm, cover the tray and wait for it to colonize? And after it colonizes I cover it with the casing layer I mentioned, cover the tray with foil, and then wait as usual until it is fruiting time?
