I love motown
    #4540967 - 08/16/05 03:50 AM (11 years, 3 months ago)

some of the greatest music this century. everyone connects with some of it. anyone who claims there isn't one motown song they like is probably lying. The shit is groovin, and so full of soul. The lyrics are universal (and not "i'm a whiny ho" sort of universal either)

What happened? Why can't we have musicians like this anymore? I think maybe the 70's disco/super rock era may have killed off the soul in pop music for good. The seattle grunge thingwas a flutter in the right direction, but as soon as it came, it was gone.

This shit that's popular today? rap, techno, nu metal? it's all souless recycled dribble. We need a motown for this generation.

can you name some popular ones off so i can add them to my music folder?

heheh...well i know what you mean. sometimes the names of songs ellude me...which just makes it more awesome. we don't know what we're listening to, but everyones like "yeah that song! it rocks"

I mostly just have a bunch of motown compilations and tend to remember them by track number but heres a few.

david ruffin - my whole world ended
the 4 tops - i'll be there
stevie wonder - sign sealed delivered
the temps - can't get next to you
(the temps in general)
(marvin gaye in general)
(the supremes)
the contours - do you love me
"what becomes of the broken hearted"
the miracles - the tracks of my tears
"shotgun"
the temps - ball of confusion

It's all funk brothers though, they wrote all the music for motown. Check out "standing in the shadow of motown" it's about the band who wrote almost all the songs. They interview and do live performances. Pretty cool movie.

i like alot of reggae too...that one song by the temptations 'the way you do the things you do' - ub40 also did a remake and maybe that's why i like alot of reggae. alot of reggae has a sort of classic sould influence to it..

Great movie. Glad the Funk Brothers are getting the props they deserve. And Ben Harper is in that movie. And Bootsy!

Man, I LOVE the Temptations. I have their 5-Disc 'Emporers of Soul' album. It's fantastic. But, motown is great. A lot of fantastic music came out of motown.

well I'm not much into the Motown and Funk, but there are some good songs for sure. ONe song I heard as I was taking a class about it hit me in such a good way was Otis Reddings "Sittin on the dock of the bay". God I really like the feeling that hits me when I hear it.

Oh, Motown definitely produced some classic, timeless music in it's day!

Too bad we don't see anything like that today.... :frown:
