removing husts/sunflower seeds a must? (birdseed grain)
    #4539878 - 08/15/05 10:31 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I am not going to try this method soon, but I may as well as now before I forget about it down the line when I start with birdseed. I have noticed a contradiction in the teks about whether or not to remove the husts and sunflower seeds after soaking the seed.

The 6T WBS Tek says they do not have to be. "There is no need to remove any floating husks, or sunflower seeds. These add lignin ( a good thing) & do not harbor any more possible contams than does the millet." Now, Doc's Wild Bird Seed Tek says otherwise. "Now, the ones that are floating on top of the water needs to be taken off and discarded, get them all out of there-yup-everyone of them."

SOOOOOOOOOO, to make a long story short....well, you already know my question....which is it?

Thanks again everybody!
Tokey

So just soak, rinse, then package in jars appropriately, then sterilize? Or do I even has to soak?

Find what works for you. Some soak, some don't. I just rinse well, and send the WBS directly to a large pot for a 40 minute simmer. Rinse again afterwards, and load up jars. Make sure to shake the hell out of your jars immediately after the PC cycle to distribute the moisture again, or you'll get sludge. Soaking seems like a big waste of time to me, but to each his own on that one.

I've never removed them outta well over a few hundred pounds of WBS, never had a problem once.

Cool cool people. God I love this community. Much better than Overgrow. I mean...uhhh....I didn't say that.

Since Diver said something about the simmer step though, I guess I should address that. How many simmer? It seems to be a logical step to me, but if it can be eliminated, I'm all for it. (lol, NO, im NOT lazy, I just don't like doing extra work if I don't have to.)

Thanks again!

Read  This, if you want to:
I don;t remove floaters.
Soak or simmer, or combo of both work.
You just have to find out what is easy & works better - FOR YOU
