A Short Story About Nothing and Everything.
    #4539460 - 08/15/05 08:57 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Darwin was drunk. Again. And Greg was helping him up the stairs. Again.

Gritting his teeth in frustration, Greg lugged his friend up another step. "Come on, Dar, you've got to help me out here."

"No thanks, man," Darwin slurred. "You can do it, okay?"

Greg had just about had enough. Whenever he went out with Darwin, the same scene played out each time. Darwin would get very drunk and start a fight with some one. They would get kicked out of the bar. Darwin would never have enough money to pay for a cab, and Greg knew that Darwin would never pay him back if he paid for the whole trip himself. So they would have to walk. Well, Greg would walk. Darwin would stumble along until he would fall down. Then Greg would have to half-carry him home and up the stairs.

Greg hated seeing his friend like this. Darwin just didn't know when to stop.

Darwin suddenly straightened and lifted his head. "Oh shit."

The vomit went everywhere. Greg felt the splash on his pants and shoes. His shirt caught some to. Darwin's puke was everywhere. The smell would cling to Greg for days. How did more land on him then the guy who puked in the first place?

"Fuck this," Greg said. They were halfway up a flight of stairs when he let Darwin slide out of his grip and into the puddle of puke at their feet. "I've had enough, Darwin. Do it yourself."

"Wha?" Darwin was lying on the stairs. He was on his back, looking up at the lights. "What the hell, man?"

Greg stormed off, not caring where he went. He just had to leave Darwin and get out of the building. He was too angry to think. He wanted Darwin to be safe and in his apartment, but Darwin was the one that drank too much in the first place. Greg told him to slow down every night. Greg never bought him any drinks, even when he asked him to. This wasn't Greg's fault, he told himself as he walked out onto the sidewalk. Darwin would sleep it off, wake up with a sore back and wonder how he got there. There would be no real harm. Darwin probably wouldn't even know that Greg had left him there.

Satisfied that his own guilt had been wiped out, Greg walked home and took a shower and went to bed. He fell asleep thinking about work the next day, rather than his passed out friend on the stairs.

He woke up to the ringing of his phone the next morning. He sat up and grabbed it. He took a glance at the phone and didn't recognize the phone number. Frowning, he answered.

"Hullo?

"Is this Greg Rower?" The voice had an authoritarian air about it. Greg felt the last of his sleep drain away when he realized what it could be about.

"Yeah," he answered with a gulp. "Is this about Darwin? Is he okay?"

"I'm afraid I've got some news for you, Greg," the voice replied.

"Oh fuck. I didn't mean to leave him there. Mother fucking fuck. I swear, he was okay when I left him," Greg was out of bed and scrambling to find clothes. Maybe Darwin choked on his own vomit and died. Maybe some crazy person in his building had stabbed him. Maybe he fell down the stairs when he finally got up again.

"No, Greg," the voice answered. "I'm just calling to tell you that you've been pre-approved for a new long distance plan that can be added onto your additional package you already have with your phone company. How does that sound to you? Would be interested in..."

"What? No. Fuck you." Then Greg hung up.

Greg later found out that Darwin was okay and had checked himself into Alcoholics Anonymous. He realized the errors of his ways and cleaned up his life. He started to live again, he told Greg. He was living again because Greg showed him how low he really got.

On the one-year anniversary of his sobriety, Greg and Darwin went out to dinner only to eat some bad eggs and die of a horrible carbon monoxide poisoning.

Greg's dying thought was about how he should have accepted that long distance package. He never did save enough on long distance.

I just farted, and I smelled of pickles.

Oddly enough, I had no pickles.

Nope, don't have one of those accounts.

A lot of my friends do. I've seen some awesome art pieces on there, though.

I'm sweating like a whore, in church!
