my best thought so far was one of those reusable chemical handwarmers... but they all heat up to 120+ degrees, sounds like if you did manage to get it to only get the terrarium to the temp you wanted it would be a lot of wasted energy.

How do you not have electricity? That's what I'm wondering...

Last I checked the Amish world wasnt that big into trippin on mushrooms :\.
Heh, but it could be that he just needs to have the terranium where it wont be seen, and the only options for that would be areas not near an outlet.
All I can think of if this is the case is to either find a method using the sun (which will only work half the day ><), or something perhaps battery powered? Dunno.

If you're in the position where you have to have it where it won't be seen,
Either, you live with your parents, or you live with roomates that have huge mouths.
If you live with your parents, then you shouldn't be growing. I know
you hear that "their house could be seized", and you don't think twice
about it, but what if it really happened?
------------------------------------------------------------------
And if you live with roomates who aren't brag about this type of
stuff, I don't think you want to face a charge of:
Manufacturing of an Illicit or controlled substance.
Possibly Intent to sell if the cops are douche bags...
But that's worst case scenario.
But still very possible...

Put it in a warm room, an attic maybe? The attic would need to be cleaned, as it is a haven for dust and other nasties. You could always snuggle next to the terrarium and use your body heat.

Fill plastic bottles (less than 2 liter) with warm/hot water, add them to the incubation chamber and monitor the temperature to make sure there isn't a big spike. Switch cold ones out for warm ones every 6-7 hours. This works for me when room temperature is below 80. Good luck

Well, if your doing larger casings with horse poo, it might do well covered outside. The horse poo is known to generate alotta heat.

You can heat water with other sources of energy, including solar (try putting water in a dark opaque container during the day, it can rise to 50-60?F over ambient temp!).

Using a heavy bath towel or two to insulate the container will help retain a lot of heat lost otherwise. Keep an eye on the temperature though, I've had spikes up to +30?F with insulation using this method.

the problem is that my friend would rather not use electricity, because he lives in an old house with few outlets, which also are inconveniently placed in the house. It's not a parent or roommate issue, not an amish one

Extention cords work wonders in old houses.
I had to have one run the full length of my basement cause my house is old...
til last week...had some new outlets put in my house.
