bleach for sterility?

Is it ok to use a bleach solution in place of lysol to cut down on contams, or would this be harmful to mushrooms as well? hmm...

it depends on what you are disinfecting. Don't get bleach near or on your mycelium as it will definitely kill them. I use bleach to clean out large things like tubs if they have come into contact with contams, but then i wipe down afterward. Also, if a colonizing jaf gets contam'ed i rinse it with bleach before using again. I would recommend just throwing the whole jar out, but i don't have the money to do that right now.

Bleach leaves a residue.
If you mean wiping the area where you are going to inoculate, then just buy some 91% rubbing alcohol.
It's $3.00 US max at Rite Aid.
Plus it works very well.
If you mean for wiping down your totes, then go with the 91% Rubbing Alcohol also, you don't want anything in there but your jars .
Put it this way, bleach kills AIDS on contact, so...
Any more questions?

Thanks, i figured on contact bleach would be a problem... I am wondering more specifically if the fumes left after wiping a tub would be harmful to friendly growth in said tub.

Like I said, residue...
You can always steal a bottle of Rubbing Alcohol if you're that broke lol..
But it's not worth going to jail for...
In my experience 91% Rubbing Alcohol kills as much shit as a Nuclear Bomb

Bleach is a great sanatizer, as well as a great dunking agent. Use it in a 1:200 ratio with H20.
No. Bleach DOES NOT kill mycelium if used at a 1:200 ratio, or even 1:100. Bleach is used to oxidize starches that we eat on an everyday occurance. Go look at your All Purpose flour in your cabinet. I'll bet it says "Enriched with Bleach".......

I'd rather just use some rubbing alcohol than measure that out...
Like I have said, bleach ALWAYS leaves residue, it never completely
evaporates.

You've got a point, but where does the residue come into play? Clear eye sight for a gloove box window? It's not harmful and does more long term sanatizing than alcohol. In fact, bacteria will breed on an alcohol sanatized spot faster than a bleached spot. Sorry, but that residue is helpful for long term cleanliness.........

LOL! I'll end this here. I mist my casing layers with the 1:200 bleach solution right up to the point I add more water weight to the casing. Fruiting cycle. No worries...............

I still don't trust anything on a raw living material that kills AIDS...
I use h2o2.

chlorine bleach is a great sanitizer and as pris said it will evap off within a few hours, if that long. as far as any residue left behind, nah no way it will fall off the tub into your casing or on your cakes. bleach will do a much better job at sanitizing than h2o2 anyday. peace

I would be taking the advice of the more experienced growers. Your advice sounds like a matter of personal opinion rather than fact. If 3 experienced growers with over 1000 posts each have tried and tested using weak bleach solutions with good success, than who can argue. I use bleach too without problem. And if it kills AIDS as you say, then it must be doing a bloody great job at fending off contams - as long as you are careful with it, bleach is great.

OMG! Don't start with the bs long term effects of bleach use. WHO did a test of Hypochlorite oxidized starches with rats and field mice in the 70's. The test consisted of feeding these animals (PURE) Hypochlorite (BLEACH) oxidized starches for weeks. There was not one single case where the bleach enriched starches had a negative effect on these species. Not even diahrea. Check and see how many starches you eat on a daily basis are enriched with bleach. Bread, dough, doughnuts, rolls, sphagetti noodles, mac and cheese, and about every flour based foods there are.
