Confused About Casing
    #4538290 - 08/15/05 04:14 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I am considering using casing, but I'm not quite clear on a few of the details.

The document I read says

"Procedure:
4. Add 1/2" (1cm) or more vermiculite layer to bottom of fruiting container.
5. Crumble or leave cake whole over bottom layer.
6. Cover cake with damp, sterilized vermiculite (note: some growers suggest leaving crumbled cake without casing until it starts to grow mycelium again (24+ hours))"

From what I understand, I am supposed to crumble a cake on top of a thin layer of vermiculite. Is the layer made of wet, sterilized vermiculite (like what is used in step 6) or dry vermiculite out of the bag?
Also, If I were to use perlite to humidify, how would I do that?

Perlite goes in the bottom of the fruiting chamber. Moisten it well, but not so that it's dripping. Stagnant pools of water lead to contams. The perlite will help bring rh up in the fruiting chamber. When using any casing material, moisten it until it doesn't drip then sterilize it. Then crumble cakes over the bottom layer, and add the top casing layer. Also, with casings, let them incubate for a little while before putting them into the fruiting chamber.

Usually you don't have to put a bottom layer in your casing.

Sure it MIGHT help with mycelium waste, but it's also a harbor for contams, but it also has more usuable water for the mycelium.

See how it just goes back and forth?

Different people will argue this though...

Definately crumble the cake..

If you have a little extra cash, go for the 50/50 tek by Ryche Hawk:

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7977

Works wonders, usually big harvests...

And usually just using vermiculite for a casing, doesn;t produce great

results, if any better than just fruiting a cake.

To use the perlite, just lay it down on the bottom of your fruiting chamber. Then fill the chamber with water until it is 1/2" to 3/4" from the top of the perlite. You don't want the perlite completely soaked because it needs to wick the water from below it to disperse it into the air. If it is soaked, it won't be able to release the water. Make sure that you keep the casing moist, but not soaked. Spray it until you see it slightly glistening and stop. Also, keep the casing thin. A thicker casing will just take longer to colonize.  Do a lot of air exchanges and make sure you are following sterile procedures, as casings are more prone to contams.

GL dude.

Also, that tek recommends cutting the cakes into slices or leaving them whole, but you just said to definitely crumble the cake. Which should I do?

Well, you can either cut into slices, or crumble.

I suggest crumbling, as you can drop into a baggie, and not have to go

through the hassle of sterilizing your knife, and possibly not

sterilizing right and messing up...

I've never heard of leaving PF style cakes whole, that would be a HUGE

casing, when your casing should only be 4" tall..

Do you have a link?

Or just tell me what the Tek name is?

Oh, lol...

Yeah, I crumble and have great success, so I can't bash or agree with slicing.

One last question to make sure I've got it straight. The Casing remains in a seperate container within the chamber itself to where it is not in direct contact with the perlite. right?

Yup...

And remember, keep a growlog, take pics (use a digi, you don't want the people at Walgreens developing your grow pics lol  )

And inform us of what you learn, <--- that is how this community was

Thanks for all the help guys.

By the way, whats the best method to sterilize a large rubbermaid container to use it for a fruiting chamber?

Should I use an air pump for air exchange?

You don't need air exchange when incubating.

But yes, that will work for when you fruit.

Google: TropicAire

or click here lol :

http://www.sporeworks.com/xcart/catalog/...mp-p-16262.html

It attaches to your air pump and keep RH (relative humidity) above 95%.

http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/...3/Itemdy00.aspx

That place is way cheaper

$11.99 compared to $39.99

And air pumps are usually less than $15.00

Or small enough to steal lol, if ya want to go to jail for a night and

aquire a record..

And I can just run the tube in through the side of the lid without losing too much rh?

No, not if it pinches it.

A just as easy and cheaper way would to be:

Buy (or steal) an air pump, get a glass, put water in it, and 2 teaspoons h2o0 (hydrogen peroxide) in it, and run the tube into the glass.

Works just the same..

Your best way to run the tube in would be to make a small hole in the side of the container. A good way to raise the rh is to put geo-lite clay balls in the bottom of the tub (from any hydroponics store) to the depth of 3 or 4 inches, then put about 2 or 3 inches of water in. Run your tube in with an airstone attached and sit it under the clay balls. You can then sit your casings/cakes directly on top of the clay balls.

Why are you constantly suggesting people steal stuff? Not a good practice mate.

First off, I have not met one person that uses a glass with bleach in it inside their TiT...

That would be bad practice...

Your Humidity would have bleach in it, and a much higher concentration than the other post.

Unless you put 1 drop in there.

Have you done this? Because I have..

Have you ever even grown... anything... at all?

It was recommended to me by one of the oldest members of this

community...

And it worked just as well as a humidifier, becasue I also have one of

those and have used it.
