what the hell are those?!?!
    #4538101 - 08/15/05 03:27 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

ok... i went to my outdoor bed today i've used horse poo as the substrate. and it is almost 100% colonized except for the outer layer. i come to find these mushies growing out of it!! they are definately not cubes and dunno where they came from. i'm guessing that they were from some other species that was in the poo pile before i got to it. i didn't pasturize it since it was going outside.

the color is a lil off the cap was a pale brown to tan and the stem was very white and hollow. they would grow very tall and then die over. like 12 inches then fall over and die.

my question is will this fruiting effect the fruting that will be happening underneath in a week or so? and will these guys get choked out since the cube mycileum is a lot more abundant? thanks for any advice guys and gals!!

i dun think this goes in hunting since they were growing off of a bed that i made... no hunting involved... it's weird because they only have grown on one of my beds and i have 5.

It still goes in hunting though...thats the forum for ID's. In this forum, most only know cubies, or a few other psychoactive species.

but i didn't want to id them... i wanted to know if they will effect my grow and if there is anything i can do to keep them from spreading (ie plucking them out) or something.

Yeah I know, its just a tough question..I mean, any contamination is a contamination..and thats what you have...how deep the mycelium of that mushroom is, and how much cubensis mycelium si there would effect it. Chances are, both will fruit from the same bed..or that bed will be toast. Picking them may help them from spreading beyond the pile, but mushrooms fruit from a body of mycelium, so there is more within that pile then just the mushrooms, so picking the shrooms wont effect the pile your picking from, and theres nothing you can do to get rid of them that I know of.

Maybe you'll get lucky and an outdoor grower will have come across this and have more for you..but theres not much you can do that I know of.

Well its not going to turn the cubies into anything different..so any thing that fruits from the pile(s) would be perfectly safe, even if you pick it from a patch of those thingies..

yes coda that is what they appear to be, they will compete with whatever else you have growing in that bed. in your case i think that if the cubie myc has about fully colonize then they should dominate over the stray myc. i could be wrong here though.
as far as where they came from, they were in the horse poo when you got it.
peace

One of the risks of unpasteurized poo..

absolutely, that is why i pasturize.
it is great that some peeps have had great success without pasturizing their poo but i am awaiting the day when one of them gets something like this because they didn't.
one never knows what is in that shit until it starts to grow and then is too late to change it.
peace
