 Legal protection of ideas - what rights would someone have if...

Curious if anyone knows what kind of protections someone would have if they were to say, come up with an idea they think might benefit a certain industry and tried to shop this idea to the top few key players of said industry while trying to sign an exclusive deal with one?
What would they have to do to protect the rights to it before they presented it to the businesses so they weren't just told "not interested" and then have the people turn around and do it on their own?

I would think getting a patent for the idea would prevent that. Of course, that wouldn't stop some companies from altering the idea just enough to get around that...

I wasn't aware that you could actually patent an idea.
It's mostly a matter of adjoining two technologies in a manner not before seen. I would think it would be closer to something like a copyright, but I don't know if it would fit the definition.

$10,000-$50,000 to get a patent, and $100,000-$1,000,000 on hand to defend it.
Unless you happen to be a patent attorney, in which case it will cost you about 1/5th as much, but you will be very busy.
Even then it's good to have a big bag of money on hand. It works kind of like a Bag of "Sh!" al la Austin Powers.
It costs about $500 to file a patent claim I think.

Actually I guess now that I think about your both right. Ultimately it would be a patent but I didn't want to develop it. It wouldn't take alot of resources for a large organzation but it would from me. I think they would likely be willing to invest to explore the potential, but I guess I really wouldn't have anyway of protecting this idea.

I believe you can patent an idea, although don't quote me on that. It would seem to me that writing it out and patenting and/or copywriting it would afford at least the legal protection of authorship. But again, I'm just guessing here.
I think your best bet would be to talk to a Patent Attorney, if you have the money. Just beware of those "patent scam" places you see on TV......

Yeah, avaod those places that are like "Send us your idea, and $100 and if we like it we'll steal it and give you your $100 back.
If not, we just keep your $100.
