Polystyrene spore balls. Way to stretch prints for trade/donation
    #4536943 - 08/15/05 07:38 AM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I have been thinking of ways to stretch spore prints for cheap easy distribution for spore rings or trading. Get some polysterene packaging and break it up releasing the tiny balls (or just open a bean bag). Now sterilize the balls in a PC in a jar with a little water and a filter disc on the cap. Now put a cap on top of the balls until the spores drop and remove it, or inject a heavy syringe ontop of them. Shake up well and leave the jar in a drying chamber to remove the water through the filter. You should now have little sporeballs which you could pick up with a cool sterile tweezers and dump in substrates or in a LC. I think it would work well in a LC, I would not shake it up, they would float at the top so it would have plenty of oxygen, if you do not shake it the spores will germinate and easily find a mate close by. It also is easier to spot growth since you will know where to look for growth straight away. You could put a few balls in a small sterile ziploc bag, cost is next to nothing.

I am not sure how well polysterene stands up to heat though.

I have no glove box etc, but I can be very careful when making a single print. This print could make 100's of balls. It may also be useful for spreading rarer spores like PE mexicana etc.

PS doesnt like heat much, I think its well below 200 degrees. Seems like an interesting idea though..perhaps another material would work?

For anyone whos wondering, PS balls are in alot of newer soft squishy pillows that fill like their filled with tiny beads. Those would work wonderful as is, I dont know if you can get them out of pillows, but big pillows of it are like 10 bucks.

I boiled some for 10mins in the microwave and they seem fine. Many plastics will deform or shrink at high temps but it doesnt really matter is the balls deform or shrink, the shap is not important. The balls were still floating. I like the idea of the balls being exposed to air in a LC.

This site lists the melting point at 240C, most plastics have 2 temps noted, softening/bending temp and melting temp
http://ptcl.chem.ox.ac.uk/MSDS/PO/polystyrene.html

Other plastic balls may work but I think spores will adhere well to the polystyrene surface.
Verm would work well, sometimes it floats sometimes not.

Hmm, I like the verm idea...easier for me...the last thing I need is something else to make a mess (those things with static cling..look out). Thats a better link for temps, I couldnt find anything good when I searched. Keep us posted, as I'm sure you will

Perlite might be a better suggestion, if floating is required. It will definitely stand up to the heat as well.

Ah! Thats even better, I got a few bags of that hidden somewhere, if I can find it, and it does me no good  Maybe I'll give both a shot..

Perlite is a great idea, I like the fact it is pure white so it will be easier to see if spores are on it. It will also readily give up its moisture to the air. I am not sure that every bit of perlite floats. Floating is not really a big issue, I liked the idea of air being available.
I have a single shroom growing at the moment, almost ready to drop, I will prepare some perlite and see how I get on.
