14th annual Humongus Fungus festival August 14, 2005 - wluctv6.com
What's more than 1500 years old, about the size of a Blue Whale, and lives underneath Iron County? If you guessed a giant mushroom, you'd be right.
And it's certainly cause for celebration at the 14th annual Humongus Fungus festival in Crystal Falls. About fifteen years ago, researchers discovered the giant plant underground in Southern Iron County.
One can't see this mammoth mushroom because it sits underground. The 1500-year-old fungus is estimated to weigh a hundred tons and cover thirty-eight acres. Ever since the discovery, Crystal Falls celebrated its natural phenomenon with a festival of brats, hamburgers, and of course, mushrooms. "It kind of put us on the map scientifically about a mushroom. And well of course in the U.P. you'll celebrate anything so we're celebrating Humongus Fungus Fest," said festival-goer Kim Olson.
