2 interesting mushrooms
    #4535008 - 08/14/05 08:53 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I came across two interesting mushrooms yesterday. The first was growing from a brittle leaf. It should be a marasmius. It is really frustrating trying to identify mushrooms when you don't know anything about trees, so I am going to try to give myself a crash course this winter.

You can see the underside of the leaf and the mycelium on this one.
The other mushroom was this mutant russula. It had a SMALL mushroom (attached cap down) growing from its cap. When I got home I was pissed off that my photos didn't show the gills and the finer details of the small mushroom. However you can see the fully formed stalk and the cap from the second picture. Weird.

Have you seen this before?

By comparison, it is physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to induce death."

That last picture is a Russla for sure. I highly doubt that the mushrooms in your pictures are Russla, however.

The russla genus is characterized by very brittle flesh. Like if you drop one it will shatter into hundereds of pieces. I've also NEVER seen a russla with veil remnants.

Here are some 100% Russlas that I've found:

And... Probably my favorite picture I've ever taken(a russla):

Wallace, nice photos. That first one looks like a Marasmius to me, too. On the second one, which I agree is a Russula, the second mushroom is probably just an extension of the first cap. I have seen that happen with Boletus edulis and Laccaria laccata, and I wouldn't be surprised if it could happen with pretty much any mushroom. Here is a photo of a Laccaria with a extra cap growing like that:

Motaman, your photos suggest Agaricus and Strpharia species to me.

Gumby, I attended a talk by Dr Steve Miller on mushrooms in Madagascar, and the Russulas there *all* have rings. Weirdest damn thing you've ever seen. It's just wrong. Certainly none of the Russula species in North America have a ring.

Happy mushrooming!

Wow, nice. The last one should be virescens right?
Do you identify Russulas to species? Mushroom Expert does not make that sound like an attractive proposition, and I have just looked the other way most times when I see a rose-colored cap.

Wallace, here's a search engine based on Kibby and Fatto's keys for North American Russula species.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks ToxicM for your picture, it wasn't there when I typed the above. Mine had a fully formed stalk. A few months ago someone posted a photo of what looked like two mushrooms growing together from the caps--just thought of that.
