When did WAR go wrong? Korea vs Vietnam
    #4535000 - 08/14/05 08:51 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

When you look back at the wars of the past 100 years that we, the United States, have been involved in, there's a certain point where things just sort of snapped.

Most ppl will look back at WWII and think about how neccessary, even noble, it was for the U.S. to get involved.

A lot of people look back at the Korean Warjust a few years later with the same feeling. A facist country such as North Korea, fueled on communism, trying to "UNIFY" the country, i.e. slay everyone in the part of the country that disagrees with their totalitarian rule.

"U.S. troops suffered 169,365 casualties, including 33,629 KIA (Killed In Action), 20,600 accidental death and 8,142 MIA (Missing In Action). Total fatality (assuming all MIA died) was 62,371."

A total of 58,226 americans were killed in Vietnam during battle, many more by mia, accidental death, etc.

So why is it that there is such an outcry against Vietnam when it was basically the same situation as Korea? (i.e. a totalitarian communist society in Asia vs democracy in a civil war). Vietnam may have had more TOTAL deaths, but the Korean war was much shorter run, more ppl killed per day.

The outcry from the public came from the news cameras bringing the Vietnam war into the living room. Normal everyday people were seeing war in all its savagery and hence were repulsed by it. This was the subsequent basis for their hatred for war and protest against it.

North Korea was right off the heels of WW2 and the U.S had an aura of invincibility surrounding them. They were convinced that this fight was a continuation of the same nobleness that was associated with WW2. There wasn't cameras up-front showing the carnage of everyday battle. The government also touted victories and downplayed the defeats and hence the public didn't have an accurate view of the war. We didn't even acknowledge that we were at war with China.

that's quite a strong hypothesis you have there....

any other possible ideas?

I was also thinking partially because of the generation gap. My dad is very pro kill-em-all conservative, but he was a bit against vietnam. I've always known from that past that I had an uncle that died in 'Nam before I was born.

I didn't find out until later that somehow my dad got drafted too, but managed to get out of it, mabye because he had two brothers in the war.

I find that the farther things are into our history, the more noble they become. Look at how Julius Caesar is revered, but if someone tried to pull what he's pulling now, it would never fly.

You bring up good points, looner.
