Paneolus Subbalteatus find

Probably can't tell from the photo (cell phone). These are subbs.

Thought it was worth a post becuase it might help those who haven't found them before. They are growing in grass clippings(small clippings from the greens) at a golf course. They throw the clippings into piles. This particular pile was on the edge of the woods in the shade ( where it stayed nice and moist.) This was one of many piles that had subbs. Didn't have my camera becuase I wasn't really looking for mushrooms. Oh well.

Yeah they are subbs. They seemed a little stunted becuase of the hot weather. They also appear whitish in the picture becuase they were kinda dry. I am very familiar with the species so I don't have any doubt what they are. Also think it might be worth mentioning that I will try to use live mycelium from this patch to inoculate an outdoor prepared bed (nonsterile). Might work, might not. According to Stamets it works. (If you look closely you should be able to see a younger mushroom in the bottom left corner that is still brown and still shows a zoned cap).

Another pic. Note the whitish gill edges. Younger gills are brown older ones are just about black. And spore print pretty much black.

That's really neat, I thought pan subbs only grew on or near horse dung, seeing that they grow in grass makes me think that there might be some closer to my house than the nearest horse farm. In your experience do most golf courses have piles of clippings like that?
Thanks

I'd say all golf courses have clippings. Whether or not you'll find subbs is a matter of chance and weather, I suppose. Some of the piles had some sort of coprinus growing in them as well. The last time I saw subbs so widespread was when I worked part time at a golf course. But that time it was growing in compost that we had laid in areas under and around bushes and flowers. I had noticed mycelium running through a large pile of this compost before it was layed out. A few weeks after it was used subbs started popping up everywhere. Literaly hundreds upon hundreds. Just shows how robust these are. No wonder they do well in natural culture.
