Today's B. barrowsii finds- pics
    #4534526 - 08/14/05 06:30 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I ID'd this bolete yesterday and found many more today, they are popping up like mad...

it's still raining out so they look a lil slimy

i hear drying is the best way to deal with boletes.  does anyone have any theories?  I picked mostly small ones, there must have been hundreds around.  I don't think they're very buggy yet, and they don't seem to have spores yet, so I don't know if i need to get rid of the pore layer or not...  I thought perhaps I could cut in half and dry in the oven.  Right now i'm letting them air dry a little on some newspaper...

Nice collection.

Drying is good, cut in quarters of slice 14 to 3/8ths inch thick, then
put them on a screen or put them on trays lined with wax paper. Then either
turn a fan on them on low or if you have a pilot light in your over put them
in there. Food dryers work well too.

Boletes saute and freeze well.

Drying is the usual method for boletes. In Europe they often dry them by stringing them on something like kite string and hanging them around the house.

Happy mushrooming!
