Some easy questions...
    #4531092 - 08/13/05 09:33 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

This will be my first grow, I have everything I need...
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Question # 1 -

Does it matter what side you put the holes into the lids?

(making the metal pointing in or out)

When I try to do them with the rubber side facing up, I ALWAYS end up creasing the metal lid...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Question #2: -

How many inches of water do you put at the bottom a a PC?

It's the reguar Mirro PC from Walmart...

I'm pretty sure 8qt maybe 12qt, and it has that metal rack in the bottom of it.

I appreciate your help.

I put my lids with metal spikes down so it doesn't pierce the foil when steralizing.

the answer to question one is to use something big enough for your syringe to fit in (i used a sterilized nail and punched through with a hammer.) be sure to puncture only when you are ready to inoculate or you risk contams. also, after your holes are punched, put sterilized tin foil over the lids of the jars and put in a place where the temp is anywhere between 80-86 degrees F.

i hope that cleared up a little bit. as for question # 2, i don't use a pressure cooker.

Shouldn't I put holes in the lids before PC'ing?

It seems like puting holes in after would a lot more riskier...

I'm definately innoculating tomorrow... 100% sure...

no no no buried, you need to punch the holes before you pc. otherwise you are risking contams punching them afterwards.

punch your holes on the non rubber side so that the metal points are in and don't punch holes in the foil cover. just like johnson said.

put your jars in the pc and then fill with water so about an inch comes up the jars.

peace

Careful not too have too many temperature extremes while PCing, or this could crack the jars.
Everything everone said so far is legit in the mind of doing the holes before PC.
But also. When you fill your jars, you should place an amount of dry vermiculite to the top of the jar on top of the cake.
This helps retain moisture and blocks out potential contaminates.

You could always just use a drill if you have one. Just make sure you don't force pressure on it so that you get a nice clean hole without any shards facing either way.  But what do I know. Im a nooooooooooob!

And definatly punch holes PRE-pressure cooking. And from what I have read, about .5 to 1 inch of water. Yes no?

I added about 1" of water to the bottom of my pressure cooker (just enough so the water showed a bit above the thing that goes on the bottom of the pan to prevent from direct heat hitting it, if yours came with that). I think I bought the same one, since I got it from walmart.

Worked well for me, no contams so far at about 50% colonized.

Cakes only need 30-45 minutes at that time, an hour would be fine. I do grains at 90 minutes, 60 works, but I get a contam or two more so I just run it for 90.

1. The side you put the holes in should not really matter in the long run if everything else is done properly, but why would you want to do it upside down...?

2. From what I have seen Wal-Mart only sells the 4 and 8 quart Mirro PCs. Consult the manual that came with your PC... I think it suggests 1.5" of water.

With BRF you can get away with only 45 min; now mind you that is 45 min AFTER your rocker is set properly.
