Over inoculation?
    #4530567 - 08/13/05 05:21 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I just got done inoculating my jars, and I think I over inoculated. I used about 5cc's per 1/2 pint jar. Is this too much, and if so what will happen and why? Please tell me I did ok.

5 cc's is WAY too much. You should stick to the 1-2 cc range per 1/2 pt. What may happen is your water content can be thrown off. There's a decent chance you'll end up ok, but, if your substrate is too wet you open yourself up to cobweb/green mold. Stick it out man, you might be ok, and the extra solution might speed things up for you. GL

well you just shot the water content of the jars sky high for one thing. maybe they will colonize fast enough that it won't matter but i doubt it.
when the myc starts growing if the environment is too wet it will retard growth and begin to rot. that is not to say that you don't have a chance at them growing. i would leave them out some place where some air can get to them so as maybe some of the water will evap out.

good luck
peace

thnx again guys. Well, the solution was pretty "stringy" and I heard that will make for faster myc growth. Im fine with the outcome either way becuase it was from my own stupidity right?lol. It will make for an interesting grow log if it does work. But I did have another question. Couldnt I just take a sterile syringe and suck out some of the water?

5 cc's is almost half a syringe. So, are you saying you did 2 jars with one syringe? That is overkill, and will most likely mess up your jars.

On the other hand, if you are talking about the little lines(graduations)...then each one of those is 1/5 of a cc(.2cc's per line). If that is the case, then you should not have any problems. Many people use 0.8cc to 1cc per jar. This is the recommended amount of innocculant for the PF-TEK.

i really don't think you could get your needle in there and suck any water back out of it. if it is pooled in the bottom flip it over and let the dry verm absorb the water and don't flip it back over. leave it be and see what happens.
hope it works for ya

I was looking at my syringe and I should have said that I used 5ml of solution per jar.

yeah, I just reAlized that. lol im a dork sometimes. I just looked and there isnt any puddles or anything. So my hopes are up. I bought the jars already full of grain, verm substrate and they seemed on the dry side so my hopes are up.

Are you sure you used 5cc per jar??? If so, how many jars did you inoculate? Because using that much innocculant per jar would mean one syringe would only be enough for two jars. So you either used a lot of syringes, or if you only used one you only did two or three jars at the most.

I'm convinced you either totally screwed up during innocculation and used WAAAYY too much spore solution, or you are misreporting how much innocculant you used. It seems like you are having a hard time understanding the metric system.

Oh trust me. I took 1 10cc syringe and inoculated 2 half pint jars.I did this with 3 different syringes.1 of Golden Teacher, 1 of Treasure Coast, and 1 of cubs b+ for a total of 6 jars.I feel like crying.lol.But like I said, my substrate was a dry looking grain formula and I dont see any pooling so hopefully Im not totally fucked. :emo:

See, that's what I was confused about. I was hoping you wouldn't have said that though, because now I'm gonna have to tell you that your jars are almost definitely fucked. Better luck next time. And just to let you know, one syringe is enough to do 10 to 12 jars. Don't waste all your money on a bunch of unneeded syringes. Just get one good one, follow the recipe, and use only 1cc per jar.

suggestion: Hit up FSRC, get a free print, and use the print to fill  up those three syringes to make new jars.  By the time you get the print you should know whether or not these are gonna work, and even if they do work, you have a print to start some new ones with

Oh its no biggie. I already have two more syringes on the way.During this mess, I will have gotten 2 out of five syringes for free. I ordered from Hawks Eye and apparently he was on vacation. So he gave me some free syringes for the delay.I have 5 holes in each jar covered by a breathable filter. I just checked them and I dont see any liquids sticking to the glass. The vermiculite seems to be absorbing it fairly well.

ok so i Inoc'd today with SS from sporeworks  two 10cc b+ needles i did 6 jars at 3 cc's a jar before i realized i was overkilling it this is my first grow at any rate 3.33 cc's per jar 4 holes per lid over 6 jars and it seemed fine to me i used a recipe i found from one of the senior members on here and im hoping things go well for me any thoughts on how my progress will go? and i want to thank the people who post on here because this place really makes a  friendly outreach i havent seen to many assholes and the community self regulates it made me feel comfortable from the day i found it  if it werent for you guys i would have bought spores from this other spore place in mi that i later found it was a chancey establishment at best

Yeah buddy 5 cc's is way way too much, you should use 1 cc per 1 pint jar as a rule

I think that Backupwards' suggestion of turning the jars over and leaving them upside down is very good.  The dry verm layer may be compromised filter wise by absorbing the spore water,  but, if they are otherwise doomed is it not worth a try?

Perhaps the upsidedownattude may offer some prevention?
