I spent alot of time rinsing all the fine "dust" out of my lava rocks in the 18 gallon container I planned on using for a fruiting chamber. I then brought about 2 gallons of water to a boil in a stock pot, and poured it over the rocks (in the 18 gallon tub)just enough to cover. I let that sit over night, and added about a cup of bleach.
I let that sit for an hour or two, and then rinsed again.
Now, I wish I would asked this question before doing all that. Putting the whole thing in a roasting pan/baking dish, and bringing it up to sterilizing temps, would've been ALOT easier.
Rinsing the rock, however, was a good idea, there was a ton of fine particles and dust.

There seems to be 2 camps, here at the Shroomery.
1. People who sterilize... EVERYTHING ! 2. People with a more "laissez-faire" attitude concerning sterilizing.
It appears that the people who complain about contamination, mostly belong in Camp 2.
The person that I speak for, is only on his forth grow. But he "goes the extra mile" with regards to cleaning. He has not had a problem.

Well.. all that you are putting in the grow chamber are colonized substrates... It isn't really necessary to sterilize the lava rocks. A good heavy rinse or two should be enough. Never heard of sterilized perlite or lava rocks.

Wash the rocks, pile them onto a pizza pan, put them into the oven 350-400 for hour and half, put in tub, and mix a light solution of h2o2 and o2 and your ready. left out some other stuff but should be a good start.

me too!~
I soak my geolite in bleachy water...
then rinse them in fresh water.
no need to cook or pressure cook anything.
bleach will kill almost anything...we deal with.
