Nearly a month, they ready for terranium?
    #4530401 - 08/13/05 04:12 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

First off hi all! I'm new to this hobby, and to this community.

I've had jars cookin for nearly a month and they are pretty much fully colonized I believe. There are a few hard areas in some that the mycelium just can't seem to get to. So what do you think is it time for the terraniums?

No they are not. You want to wait until the cakes are completely colonized... as in completely white and covered. Even after that it isn't a bad idea to leave them for a few more days to let the mycellial network strengthen.

If the only area left to be colonized is the top layer of vermiculite than yes they are ready for the terrarium. Good luck.

When the jars are fully colonized...then they will be ready.

Pull the tape off the tops of the lid!~
There is no need for the tape at this point...it's actually holding the jars back from fully colonizing.

Damn didn't know that one, thanks for the tip... How long should the tape stay on after injection?

I would.... But this is my first run and I know the aspects of sterility but not sure I want to try too advanced of methods on my first go.

And I know i've read this answer here before but whats an average dry/wet yield for pf cakes? (all flushes)

Bump, how long after inoculation should the tape come off, what are the signs?

No rule for that really. I don't even use tape at all when doing cakes. But if it slows down, definitely pull the tape if you have it on. You need to have a little bit of gas exchange when there is mycelium in the jar.

oh, btw... try at least two of your jars in a small casing and leave the others as cakes. It will give you an edge for the next time. It really isn't tough to do a casing.

Another thing, those cakes look like they would make it to me as they are. I have birthed a couple of cakes before that looked just like that. They came out ok. (about 3 grams dry on first flush). But, that was just me. If I were you, I would listen to Roadkill first beore listening to me. He has done WAYYY more cakes than me.

Good luck

Thanks for the input CLUTCH, I think I'll look into casing a few.... I just inoc'd another 10 jars this morning anyway...

What temp/duration is best for sterilizing a pan in the oven for casing?

I pull the tape off when the mycelium growth gets to the size of a quarter.

If your jar ever stalls without the tape on...flip the jars.

Lets the C02 escape out of the jar, since- C02 is heavier than air.

The C02 trapped inside of a jar can slow or halt growth. But like Road says, only do it if it stalls without the tape on. It's not a bad thing to do, but should only be done towards the end of the growth.

Good luck
