cook bird seed for how long??

anyone know why you need to pressure cook bird seed in jars for so long...can't you just pressure cook for 20 minutes?

There are endospores that can't be killed unless pressure cooked for a period of time. You should boil the seed for one hour before pressure cooking also.

I always boil the seeds for 45 minutes before pressure cooking just so the seeds absorb as much water as they can, after that I use a spoon with the slits in the bottom to scoop the seeds out and drain the excess water from, then I put it in the jars and pressure cook for an hour (about 15 minutes to get to 15 psi, then 45 minutes @ 15 psi). Boiling alone doesn't kill the bacteria and stuff inside the seeds, pressure cooking is almost a "have to do" thing.
