Drying with hair dryer?
    #4528812 - 08/13/05 01:30 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

After I dried fresh psilocibe cubensis mushrooms with a hairdryer, they turned mostly black, and became easy to crumble. Did I dry them at too hot a temperature? Did they lose potency? Are they still safe to eat? Can using a hair dryer be a decent method of drying?

they shouldn't turn black. its hard to say without a picture. you might have got them too hot.

it sounds like you applied way to much heat from the get go.
you only stereotypically supposed to be using a 12v fan to produce enough air to dry those fuckers off.

Are they still safe to eat? Will they work at all?

safe to eat???? its just like burnt toast....lol yea.
but will they tasted good?? I ASSUME HELL NO!
and will they work....that is something you will have to find out on your own. i know freezing them causes the potentsy to drop intensely. but i dont know about burning them.

How long did it take to fully dry them. They will still be safe to eat, though they might taste worse, and might give you less of an effect. I use a dehydrator to dry my mushrooms, at 150+ with no loss in potency..takes 12-24 hours to dry that way though..if it took less then 6-12 hours you might have tosted the chemicals..you might not have. I would give them a shot for sure either way..

Yeah it only took about 3 or 4 hours.

What kind of dehydrator do you use, and where can I get one, and for how much?

scat, this article has some information on drying methods, showing a significant loss of potency with anything slightly higher than 26C (75F). the tests performed were on Panaleous cyanescens (which were said to have a higher concentration of water than cubenesis) but i still think the information would be relevant:

you don't even need a dehydrator. just sit them out in a dry area, like a closet shelf (i keep a very small space heater turned on low in my closet.) i've reduced wieght 90% this way so i doubt there is much water in mine. this is also a free method. i have some shrooms that are 2 months old and still look good. i'll let you know tomorrow if they are still potent.

incubator/dehydrator:

Well I've dried countless cope cyans, and 1/2 a gram is enough for most people, 1 gram being to much for most..1.5 being to much for me and my girl..

One test, with one batch involving a few mushrooms isnt so conclusive. I've dried mushrooms for over a year, dozens of pounds, this way. The only complaints that I get are they are to strong..
