45: 1 Flight Patterns/Just If She's There (Trend 1036) 1967 2 Whenever You Want Me/Denis Dupree From Danville (Trend 1051) 1969
Denis and The Times were formed by the three Burlage brothers and two friends in Norfolk, Virginia. With promotional help from their father they released their debut 45 in the Fall of 1967 - and Dad should've been proud, 'cause his boys produced a classic that's revered to this day.
From the opening ringing chords to the final flourish of spacey effects, Flight Patterns is a wondrous piece of 8 Miles High-inspired psychedelic folk-rock complete with freakout guitar break. Good enough indeed to have graced The Byrds' Younger Than Yesterday or Fifth Dimension platters. Compilers seem to agree - you'll find it on 30 Seconds Before The Calico Wall (CD), Sixties Rebellion, Vol. 9 (LP & CD) and Aliens, Psychos And Wild Things (CD). The flip ain't half bad either - check it out on Killer Cuts (LP) and Ear-Piercing Punk (CD).
Their second 45 was released in the Spring of '69. Whenever... is a heavy pop ballad with strident vocals and punctuated by fuzz attacks. The flip is a faithful cover of the Cryan' Shames (on their Scratch In The Sky album) - but with a harder edge and burnin' guitar.
(Vernon Joynson/Max Waller/Brent Hosier/Dr. Simon Trent D.S.U.)
I give this track 3 out of 5 electric sugar cubes.
