Hey all its me again, I have some correspondance from our friend Derek. Some of you may not know Dlagwagon, here is a post explaining his situation. Clicky!~
He wanted me to post this letter for you all, again I ask all of you to please take some and write him a letter back, some of you already are in communications with Derek. Your support has done wonders for his esteem and mood... I have noticed a definite up in his attitude and outlook on the future and his release. I thank you all for you support of our friend and his battle through this tough sentance.
Take care, Effed~

I was wondering the same thing. Just want to try to give him some peace of mind that there are people who don't even know him standing on the sidelines routing for him.
Edit - Thanks annom... question answered.

At least he's optimistic. 4 years in jail isn't as bad as it could be as long as he makes the best of it, which it sounds like he's doing.

I've been writing him practically daily. He's doing well and asked me if you had posted his letter to the community. I've already written him back but will let him know that you have and he should receive many letters.
I also sent him two books that were on his list of what he wanted to read. "Acid Dreams" and "PIKHAL". I'll probably get him TIKHAL if no one else has when he's done the first part.
If anyone is interested in sending him a book, let me know and I'll post a list of the few he said he was interested in reading and the details of how and where to send them. (It's a different address and must include a receipt and must be sent from an online book store, or from the store itself. Not from a person.)

Who knows. If he writes and says he didn't get them, then I guess not. I don't think they would really care about reading material. I know other places don't.

Also rehab is probably a different case than jail...I think as long as the book you were receiving in jail didn't have info about making weapons/escaping then you'd be ok. No one in jail will have all the stuff to make anything in TiHKAL or PiHKAL anyway.

AA and NA while in jail is a joke. They don't care as much as they'd like the public to think. I don't think he'll have any problems what so ever getting the books.

I think I'm going to write him as well. Each time I think back to what happened I get riled up because it's such bullshit. And to hear what that girls parents say... they're so f***ing stubborn.
He does seem very optimistic. It's really evident and I guess obvious that he's been doing a lot of thinking. But again, good that he seems to be optimistic. Fortunately the kid has it in him to stay strong and he's not having a hard time... he must sure miss the outside world though, and his home. Poor guy..

He's doing really well for himself. He's taking some courses and doing productive things to make his time easier. We write each other very often. If I get the chance to be down that way, I'm definitely visiting him.

This is ridiculous. Drug use has such ridiculous stigma. It reminds me of justifing racism 'because minorities are bad', without any true insight into what is going on at all. I am definitely going to write him a letter this week. Possibly many. Just.. fucked up. I'd like to learn more about the situation, I feel bad for the death, and for the sham that is drug law & punishment. To be perfectly honest, regardless of his actual degree of involvement with her death, prison is not the way to solve a drug problem like that. Be it simply use, or dealing. He deserves respect. Punishment is such a tragic way to solve a problem, beyond hope or reason, the last resort of a confused society. This applies to even more than simply drug crime, but that is certainly not a realm that I am familiar enough to really comment on.
I'd like to find out about his situation from him, and, well, try to help. Sending books does seem like a good idea. Would something like a cd of music be able to get through? I guess I should really ask this kind of thing in a letter eh? heh.

I don't think he would be able to get any use out of a cd since he has no means of playing it. If you want to send him books though, this is the list he gave me that he was interested in reading:
Confessions of a Dope Dealer Electric Kool Aid Acid Test TiHKAL (any other good psychedelic / drug books)
Books have to be sent to:
Derek Hansen 474107 RYOCF 1414 Albert St. Racine, WI 53404
They MUST have the receipt included and they have to be sent by either the store they are purchased from, or you can have them shipped to him via an online book store. They can't be sent directly from an individual.
I know he'll be very happy to hear from everyone. It gives him something to do, and takes his mind off where he's at.

Because some prescription drugs have enormous recreational value. Oxycontin, Xanax, Percocets, etc., and someone has to sell them.
You don't hear of this in your area? Prescription drugs are huge around here.

I don't know why you all are sending him ton's of books but haven't even thought about canteen yet. That's why I asked earlier in the thread. When I was in jail books were nice but canteen or commissary some people call it was the bread and butter of the jail house experience. I am assuming the procedure is to send it to the same addy you gave earlier but a money order and he must have an inmate number or something. If you can give me details I am down for a $30 bomb.

Yeah seriously.. books are nice to pass the time.. but canteen is the lifeblood. At least at the jail I was at.. if you didn't have canteen money.. you were hungry *all* the time. They fed you three weaksauce meals a day, and that's it. The canteen didn't even have any real food in it.. but you could trade canteen items like coffee and cocoa for items off people's food trays.
Also the soap they give you is SHIT. Canteen lets you buy all those "luxury" items, like regular soap, shampoo, conditioner, real toothpaste, t-shirts and socks and other clothes, drinks, real food and snacks at most jails.. puzzles.. pen, paper.. even radios and stuff at some places. I suspect if they let him have a guitar in that prison then it's pretty lax and he can get a lot more stuff.
Anyway.. yes people.. send books and letters - good good good. Moral support goes a LOOOOOOOONG way in prison. But also try and send him a little bit of canteen money if you can afford it. Seriously it makes a huge difference in quality of jail life. A little money goes a fairly long way.

He requested books and I'm pretty sure I asked him if he needed cash. I don't remember him saying he did so I assumed his parents were taking care of him in that aspect. When I hear back from him, which should be soon, I'll ask him about canteen and that there are some people who are interested in sending him some cash. I'll get the details of what needs to be done in order for him to receive it.

Poor guy. He seems like a really good guy. Hope he doesn't have too hard of a time there. He seems like he's in pretty high spirits though.

Not at the jail I was in. Here was our "food" list:
Sugar-free cocoa packs Certs - mint or fruit Instant Coffee bags Sugar-free candies
That was it as far as 'food' went, in canteen.
Other jails in florida, I hear they have tuna packets, full bags of doritos, crackers, peanut butter, candy bars, etc etc..

Damn bro you must have been in the sticks. At the West Palm Beach Stockade right across from the sound advice ampetheatre we had a two page list of shit we could order. Like ten varietys of ramen. Instant coffee. different kinds of soaps, shampoos, tooth pastes. Candys like Jolly Ranchers, butterfingers, snickers, baby ruth, hunny bunns. Beef jerky. All kinds of chips like your mentioned. Basically anything made by Frito-lay. Cookies. Seriously lots of shit. We would make these things called goulashes made out of like three different catagories of those foods in a soup. Best thing I ever made was a Cake. We all threw in. It was like bread, apple jelly, a melted baby ruth and ground up vannila cracker. And like you said you can trade. It was funny to wake up in the morning and hear. I got two grits for one Egg. or some shit like that. Its like chow is a fucking auction the whole time. Along with all that canteen we got refer to smoke at every viso(visatation) we were allowed contact visits there so dudes girl friends would sneak them shit that they somehow got through the strip search afterwards.
That really helped to make the time go by. Oh and did I mention we had like a HBO channel for the entire pound. There was a channel 3 where you could turn to that was hooked to a dvd player where they played 3 different dvds a day. I must have been at a fucking resort compared to the place you went to shroomism. There were hard niggas there though but fuck them. I made friends with a couple people who looked after my shit and I looked after theirs.

nope man not in the sticks.. Ocala Florida.. right north of Orlando.. south of Gainesville.. don't ever go there
We didn't have TV, radio.. nothing. That place is a fucking nazi camp. People were looking forward to being shipped from there to prison so they would have more freedom
Oh and did I mention you had to pay THEM to be in jail there.. $1 a day. Fucking rediculous.. especially considering that the inmates grew all the food, cooked all the food, served all the food.. and the rest of the food was donated. The inmates did everything that was work.. the only staff were the guards, and 2 nurses.
It's funny though... "I got a side of greens for cornbread!".. "4 cocoas for a main!".. "bag of coffee for a breakfast tray"
I remember someone managed to smuggle in some tobacco somehow.. trustee was passing us little pieces of toilet paper with enough tobacco for one cigarette under the door.. and he was charging $4 worth of items for one. Oh yeah, then you had to figure out a way to roll it - bible paper.. and then you had to find a light.. 50 cents for a flick of flame.. for a bible paper rolled cigarette that 10 people would crowd around you asking for a drag the second it was lit.
One guy managed to sneak an entire bottle of oxys in up his ass.. he turned himself in. He wouldnt share with anyone though.. and he was so fucked up for like three weeks straight.

Yeah we had the hook up for the herb. I made friends/aquitances with this one black dude who ended up getting sentenced to 10 years. His GF would sneak in a ballon of herb evey viso. I would throw him like 10 bucks of canteen shit every week. It was regs but after 3 months of no smoking believe me it had me tripping. We would just use this toliet paper thing winded together with a pencil led between it and two paper clips in a socket. Put in the two paper clips and connect the led and it sets the paper on fire. It was crazy. The Deps would smell the weed but there was like 60 guys in a dorm and everyone was cool enough or knew better to not rat.

hehe.. we didn't even have electrical sockets... or pencils..or paper clips..
Effed - canteen is like the jail 'store'.. if someone puts money into your account then you can order things - toiletries like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc (the default is they usually only give you one bar of SHITTY soap a week, a cheap toothbrush and nasty toothpaste) .. extra food and snacks.. cards and games.. cards to send to family and friends.. pen and stationary.. and whatever else they might have on the canteen list.

I don't think porn is allowed because they don't want the inmates to get sexually aroused and take it out on other inmates, if you know what I mean..
btw, I got another letter from Derek and I've already written back. I asked him how to go about sending him money for canteen and said that he should be receiving much more mail now. He'll be happy to hear that.

It's a great feeling when you are able to make someone so happy just by doing something so little. Derek received the books I sent him and was exceptionally grateful. I'm glad I was able to make him so happy. He sent me a card and I just wanted to share some of what he said in it in the hopes that it will encourage some of you to spend a little bit of time in order to write and make him just as happy. He really does enjoy the letters he receives, probably more than you could ever imagine especially during this time.
Anyway, this is a bit of what he said after receiving the two books I sent him:
"I received the books you sent yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to get 2 and especially the two that I got! I have so little faith in most people these days and it's so reassuring to know that there is still some good people out there that enjoy giving as well as receiving and get happiness from making others happy. I feel indebted to you and wish I could return the favor. However I hope we have an everlasting friendship and I promise to make it up to you as soon as we have the pleasure of meeting..."
This part brought tears to my eyes:
"Words can't express how appreciative I am of your friendship especially during this hard time I'm going through."
It doesn't seem like a huge deal to pick up a pen and write a few lines to someone who is going through a hard time right now but the happiness that little task brings to someone like Derek is indescribable. I hope those who said they would write to him, do. It seems like such a small thing to us, but to him, it's a little piece of heaven and nothing compares to how wonderful it feels to know you bring a smile to anothers face, especially at a time like this.
I personally thank all those who have written and are going to write for making his time just that much easier. You guys are great.

I'm going to write him too.. I also forgot. Man.. when you're in jail.. getting a letter is like one of the greatest things you can hope for.. like seriously. It makes your entire day.. and maybe even week. You save those letters, and you write back.. not much else to do.... But he's got a guitar.. man that's a good fucking deal. I would also like to send him some tablature.. anyone know what kind of music he is into?
ok wait I'm stupid..... Lagwagon.. that's punkish. I'll just send him a whole bunch of different shit.

It would be cool if we sent like regular letters. Like somebody print out some tablature and send it.. then send some more a couple weeks later.. by 2009 he'll have a whole damn library.

I sympathize with his situation, I've been there a few times [not as bad though] but when someone knows the consequence [although the consequence is unfair] there is no one to blame but him. He knew exactly what he was doing, and he just ran out of luck.
edit: i spent about 4 months in jail , it was awful. I can't imagine 5 years!! i will definitely write him a letter although I don't know him

Yeah I'm fairly certain he wasn't thinking that his friend would OD and put him in jail for 5 years. It is total bullshit. I don't care who sells you what. What you put in your body should be your responsibility and no one elses. This girl knew it was an 80 oxy and it is indeed sad that she messed up and died. That doesn't mean he deserves to be charged with wreckless homicide. It's not like he blew it up her nose. We don't charge drug companies when people OD on their products, or the liquor companies when people get alcohol poisoning. So why is someone who deals drugs illegally responsible for what their users do with their products?
Anyways, I also forgot to write him and I will be doing so sometime very soon...

Yeah you can send books but they have to be brand new, in the package, with a receipt.. sent straight from the distributor or book store. That's the only way he'll get them.
