Casing quesions... buffer used and how layers were placed....
    #4528874 - 08/13/05 03:56 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

So we just finished a pretty sloppy casing job, imo. I put a half inch layer of coir/coarse verm mixed, then a cake, then another coir/verm layer then another cake with a thin layer of coir/verm ontop of that. Then there's limestone mixed in as a buffer.

I couldn't find Calcium Carbonate anywhere so I found pulverized/powdered limestone. It's 98% calcium carbonate but it has a couple other stuff in there but generally will raise the Ph. Will it matter using limestone vs pure calcium carbonate?

Will the way I did the casing affect my grow negatively?

Now that the casing is done. How should they be taken care of? Should I get a container and fill the bottom w/ perlite along w/ spraying the casing or just let it sit in the incubator and spray it daily? What temp should it be at for casing? Did I miss anything? Help appreciated.

thanks,
Cracka

Yes, the way you did your casing will affect it very negatively.

A casin layer is there simply to provide moisture to the myc, putin a layer in the middle is pointless as you cant mist this, the myc will prolly colinise it and you will likely still get ok results but the myc will have to use up some of its NRG to colinse the middle layer that then wont go into producing shrooms, better off just forgetin the bottom and middle layers and just putin a thin layer over the substrate..

I agree it was a waste of the first cake in a way. 98% calcium carbonate is perfect. Bottom layer should only be verm if you ever feel the need to use it (I don't) it was created to absorb excess water from incorrect water delivery (over watering) Reading this has helped many new to casings, Getting the most out of your casings!, A pinning strategy.
