Casing with VERMICULITE

I am about to attempt my first grow, and was thinking about casing. Would it be ok to use straight vermiculite as the casing layer?

The reason Im asking is because Im suddenly broke, and all I have is pearlite and vermiculite. Is there anything else I can use that is really, really cheap and locally available?

Coir only costs a couple bucks for a brick, but otherwise verm by itself will work ok.
