Trouble growing watermelon
    #4527723 - 08/12/05 06:52 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I'm a n00b when it comes to gardening. Earlier this year I planted about 4 watermelon seeds and they all grew very healthy. The only problem is, when the watermelon grows to about the size of a golf ball, it starts to turn brown, I guess its decomposing...? It eventualy rots into nothing. What's causing this?
Is it from insect? Could it be because of the terrain underneith?
There is old pine straw covering the ground under the plants. Should I place the currently growing watermelons on top of a plastic bucket lid?

What should I do??

(Note: Watermelon can be considered a drug seeing how carbs and sugars release serotonin into the brain, so this thread is in the right forum.)

The only thing I know about watermelon is that a crop can't be planted in the same place for something like 20 years.

my guess would be that the flowers are not getting pollinated.
from my experience watermelons need a long growing season so maybe its not the right climate.
hope that helps

The flowers ARE getting pollinated. I do not believe you read my first post. The watermelon ARE developing, but once they reach the size of about a golf ball, they start to rot/decompose.

i read your post its just that ive had pumpkins and melons do the same thing which i believed was lack of pollination. maybe not

i have also heard that curcubits (pumpkin, watermelon etc) can produce an abundance of female flowers to ensure that some get pollinated but then "aborts" some of the fruit to allow the others to fully develope.

as i said before this is "my guess" so could be totally wrong

how wet are you keeping your soil?
seems to that a 'water' melon would need an incredible amount of water
during fruiting, sun too ill bet...

what is your climate like?

seeing as the plants are outside id say at least a couple of them should get pollineted...

the most commen cause with potted plants for lack of fruits is too small a pot..
it could be that the root system of that tree is nog leaving enuff room for the melons... if u dont get it fixed id definetly try another spot nex time...

I had this same problem this year. You seem to have to keep them turned, not allowing a side to sit in the moisture/dew everyday. A small inclined wooden platform would definetly help. Careful not to snap their stems though.

My father grows watermelons every year (and also regular melons).

20 years is more than overkill, general consensus here is that 4 years/crop is more than enough.

Watermelons actually do not need much water, and are traditionally grown in extremely dry climates with just a little 'drop by drop' irrigation.

The drier the conditions the smaller the fruits, but also the sweetest and tastiest.
If one waters them too much he'll get humongous fruits but they'll taste like...water...

I have no idea why yours are 'aborting', most likely Organic hit the nail on the head. Around here we grow them in our extremely dry summer, that's probably the reason we do not have such rotting problems.
