Kelp meal tea for Dunking
    #4526693 - 08/12/05 04:10 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I started some poo a lil while back and got the first flush almost done and am gonna dunk as soon as harvested. I was wandering if I could make a tea with kelp meal and use that to dunk the casing... has anyone tried this, would it work for more nutrients?
Thanks

Hmmmm. IMO, dunking with a nutrient rich bath isn't a good idea. The nutrients should be added prior to spawning or inoculation. BUT! I've never tried kelp or coffee exc. in dunks. I've only used soy milk with poor results.

I do know that Kelp is very rich in Tryptophan. A good thing. Just try it in minimal amounts if you must. But IMO, I wouldn't. It would suck to loose a bulk sub because of a bad dunk bath. Something like this should be tried with smaller applications like cakes exc.

Coffee grounds have been used by cmmercial growers forever..but ph adjustment is needed. There is also The Coffee Project (search here for it, I think its in the archieves) which involves hydrating grains by soaking and simmering them in a 50/50 mix. Dunking with coffee, for those who have tried it, leads to contamination though. I'm unsure if dunking in kep meal will help, hurt or neither, but I also wouldnt try it if you are afraid of losing it. Just add it in next time when you hydrate the poo.

Removing a substrate from a tray - most often exposes 360 degree's of it to possible contaminates. Dunking in a nutrient solution gives all those possible contaminates a perfect place to land - germinate & spread.  :mad2:

I would simply over-water it -in the tray -, then an hour later, pour off any excess water/moisture - remaining. Then repeat that same process again - the following day. That should allow the substrate to soak up - as much moisture - as it can.
