Amanita Muscaria beauties..
    #4525664 - 08/12/05 05:34 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Hi there!

Few days ago I noticed the first specimens popping out from the ground and now there are about 20 total visible in the woods near my house.
Here is the entrance:

Location southwest Finland.

Snapshot with 2 specimens

One of those picked up:

And here are two babies that I photographed 3 days in a row. I made a small animated gif too.

..to be continued/updated

Very beautiful ! I am planning an amanita hunt too with a friend.
You should definitely send these images in Erowid. They are very clear. You use a digital camera ?

As a photographer, I'd say they're ok. Very decent pics, but not very special.

Not A. pantherina, most likely A. rubescens, although the stem looks a little strange. It looks like there are lines going down the stem, but I think that's just from some bugs eating at it.

I have read that Amanitas picked earliest in the in the season such as right now in August, are the most visionary and potent. Where as the ones picked later in the fall are much less entheogenic.

Could anyone here back this theory up with your own experiences? I am really curious in hearing people's experiences with this mushroom.

If I only lived in a location where they grew I would certainly be experimenting with them myself. Someday I will have that chance I hope.

surwinmaxawow, yes I read the same thing.. from shroomery's amanita topics or something

I couldn't find a good and simple help for how to preserve them.
But this is what I did:
I cut off the stipes, scraped off the gills from the caps and put them caps hanging flat on a net to help them dry. Damn, it was messy job but I got the hang of it after practicing some and messing up two caps  :P

The pieces of leftover gills smell really bad the next day in room temperature

The Amanita FAQ's told that you should leave one or two mature specimens in the spot so that the spores can fall and you find more next year at the same place. I left few and also took the scraped out gills back in the woods.. hoping that they could contains some mature spores. Or do the spores have to fall out naturally to seed the future generations?

I'll dry the next harvest specimens in oven. I couldnt find any maggots or bugs at all. Very lucky and they looked perfect condition overall. I won't probably be experiencing with them in less than 6 months. Some faq told that the toxins chemically break down into psychoactive ones over time. Muscarine breaks down. And Ibotenic acid breaks down to muscimole - psychoactive.

please correct me in this.

  :enraged: :shake:

Some ignorant kid has run over some 10 amanitas with his dirtbike.
Still there are about a dozen left. I collected some better looking scraps that survived the dirtbikes mayhem.. sad.

Great location and nice finds. Amanita muscaria is not native to Australia but we can find them growing with their mycorrhizal partners, Pine and Birch trees that were introduced from Europe.

There is now evidence suggesting Amanita muscaria has invaded our native forests and is displacing indigenous mycorrhizal fungi.

Here are a couple of little beauties found close to my home(Sydney, Australia)

how can a mushroom that lives in symboisis with a living tree displace species that grow off of decomposting plant matter?

Your question doesn't relate to my quote.

I am stating that Amanita muscaria has invaded our native beech witch has it's own mycorrhizal partner indigenous to Australia.

Yes I did cut out gills for 2 reasons for the bugs and for more potent dry weight - as the most potent meat is supposed to be under the skin, the yellowish meat.

I wasn't sure about the bugs..

ps. offtopic: about your sig.. is this the same as in your sig?

if your asking if they are the same mushroom, i believe they ARE infact coprinus genus, but they dont look to be the same mushroom species as what you posted...

nice gill shot
