Panaeolus papilionaceus var. papilionaceus (Bull.) maybe..not...
    #4524407 - 08/11/05 11:05 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

found these today on a lawn here in beautiful northern virginia, usa.

I'm basing the tentative ID on this
http://www.bioimages.org.uk/HTML/R157060.HTM
though admittedly the other specimens that they show as Panaeolus papilionaceus var. papilionaceus (Bull.) don't look similar.

If anyone has a better thought on what they might be pitch it in.

I was looking at the pics and I've come to think that the stems of these aren't at all like the pic that I linked to. Also the cap shape on some of the younger specimens seem reminiscent of some cope specimens I've seen. What does anyone else think?

Those p belong tot he Panaeolus campanulatus complex. They are mot P. papilionaceus which is very close to Pn. subbalteatus. ANd they are not the mushroom Paul Stamets misidentified in his guide as P. papilionaceus.

Wow. These look a lot like the active pans I identified as subbs last summer. The caps are a similar saize, and the stem is somewhat thin and has the same kind of luster. One of these blued at the base- you can see it in the blurry image.

I still think these may be subbs. They were found in rotting straw/horse poop.

Is papilionaceus a synonym of sphinctrus?

thanks mj.
what characteristics placed it into Panaeolus campanulatus complex for you?
I've been able to find this image which was labeled as P. campanulatus,

however these specimens have no veil remnents or stem ring.
Is there something else I'm missing?
I agree though that these are definately not P. papilionaceus.

ps. did you happen to get a chance to look at the thread I linked to a few posts up from this regarding the pans with the upturned margins? I'm wondering if you are familiar with these.

Thanks alot.
