How am I doing? [Casing w/Pics]
    #4525588 - 08/12/05 07:01 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Curious as to whether or not this looks right. I've got 3 casings going, the two w/mycellium coming through have been in the FC since Monday night, the one w/myc has been in there since Wed. night. Do these look ok? Is everything progressing as normal?

They're 50/50 peat/verm cases w/2 BRF PF tek cakes each. The FC is a tub w/perlite @ the bottom.

Temp. in the FC is 83, RH is 89%.

In the 50/50 tek, it says to put them directly into the FC after casing --- so that's what I did. But then I read hyphae's pinning strategery and it said to cover them w/foil until the myc pokes through. I've been giving them manual FAA 2x a day. Did I f things up or am I good?

Here are the pics...

Also, they get no light @ all [FC is covered by a blanket] other than when I'm doing FAA. Should I patch those spots that are coming up or just let it do it's thing until myc is coming up everywhere and then start initiating my pinset?

Id say just wait, next time I suggest incubating before putting your casings in the fruiting chamber. If your results arent optimal, dunk after fully colonized.

yeah, you should inccubate b4 putting into the FC. Putting directly into the fc will slow/stop the vegitative growth of the mycelium and it will take much longer to get pins. I have also seen this effect yields.

incubate with a foil cover with holes punched in it until first signs of mycelium hit the caseing layer, then fruit. You will still probably get mushies from this, but it is going to take a while.

What if I took the casings out and covered in foil for a few days now? Too late to do that?

Someone should update the 50/50 tek then --- because it says to place directly into the FC after casing.

If can't take out of the FC now, any idea how long it'll take to pin?

try and drop your fruiting temps down to 73 to 76 degrees F.

I like high humidity til I get pins...then I drop the humidity down on my casings.

keep giving fresh air exchanges!~

and give em light...

and you will get some fruit.

I wouldn't take them out of the FC once they have been in there already for this long. You should do what Roadkill suggests at this point, that will help speed things up for you. I couldn't tell you an exact time frame you will see pins, but it shouldn't take you all that much longer than normal, maybe a few days longer.

Just lower your temps, keep humidty up, and give it a lot of FAE. This will help it pin much quicker.

Great, thanks guys. Hopefully I'll be back in a few days with pics of some pins and then mushies.

Ok, so they've been @ temps between 74 & 76 since Friday afternoon. Fanning them 4 or 5 times a day and the humidity has been in the high 90s. I see nothing yet --- no pins and the myc that was poking through before seems to have subsided. I have been misting, but I'm worried something might be wrong.

Any suggestions? How long does it normally take for knotting to start?

Also, how can I tell if the myc is dead?

One more ?.

If it's dried out, will dunking it rejuvenate it? Should I dunk/cold shock the casings?

Hard to say with those pics but I'd say there way to dry bro, myc and fruitbodies thrive at a near saturated environment. To learn more about exactly what this is (near saturation) read this thread.
