Drying a large amount of mushrooms.
    #4508096 - 08/07/05 07:15 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

A friend of mine has a large amount of fresh mushies he just picked. He needs them dried asap so they dont begin to rot. Cannot use dessicants because there are so many, fan drying is also not an option at the moment.

How would one go about drying mushrooms in an oven? He read somewhere that on the lowest heat setting, left sitting for 6+ hours, the shrooms will be ok. Any truth behind this?

Any other methods one would reccommend? How about sun-drying?

Thanks a ton!

Sorry I don't have an answer to your question but why can't he use multiple dessicants?

Pick up a dehydrator with as many trays as possible, and you'll have the best drying solution to date. No more fans, screens, or messy desiccant to screw with this way.

Make sure the food dehydrator does not use heat to dry, as that slightly decreases the potency of the mushrrom itself as the psycho active chemical breaks down when heated.

That used to be the train of thought, but I currently use a dehydrator that runs wide open (HOT!) and there are no complaints about my potency whatsoever.

He can grow shrooms but he can't use a fan to dry them?

...put them on top of a TV/Monitor that generates a decent amount of heat.

...or just use a whole lot of damprid in multiple trays.

NO, but it doesn't, sorry.

I use a dehydrator, and have for a while now, and there is NO decrease in potency. Mine has no temp control and runs probably close to 180 degrees...it's f'in' HOT, as in...you can't hardly touch it while it's on.

If there is, how in the world does mushroom tea work? Water doesn't boil until 200 F.

This is the most common newbie rumor, no offence meant.

I thought that they didn't lose potency in tea because they weren't exposed to oxygen. Aren't both oxygen and heat required to break down psilocibin?

I have dried liberty caps in an oven before. It worked great, and I don't believe I lost much potency. I put the temperature to the lowest setting, turned on the fan and let the door half open for about 12 hours. I put a thermometer in the oven and it was about 30C in there. Be careful with the temperature!

Regarding the heat issue:

Whereas it is true at higher temperatures the active ingredients will break down, the temperature at which they break down is higher than what most people seem to think. I have no exact number, but the main thing is that you wouldnt be able to smoke it from the heat of the flame right on the mushrooms. I imagine anywhere below 200F should be perfectly fine, and even over that you probably wont lose much.

It is a fact that is written in many books and websites. It has been proven over many years of research by many scientists. How about this. You cook your shrooms in extreme heat either by boiling them extrensively, or frying them extensively and see how potent they are in the end. Its a fact of life buddy. Now it may be a high temp range, but it DOES break down. Most people will not notice the loss because they wont use high enouhg temps.

Melting point for psylocybin is 173C. And Psilocin is 254C.

212F And yea, it's a myth that low-oven temperatures destroy psilocybin. 180 is fine for drying them.

First off, no it isnt and no it hasnt. Second off, were not cooking the mushrooms at high heat, I responded to someone saying a dehydrator with heat will break down actives. So again, I say PROVE IT. I use a dehydrator all day long for pounds and pounds of mushrooms, I've cooked them on the stove, on the grill, in the oven, fresh and dry, boiled them in water, and used cool water for them. I've ingested them fresh right off the casing, and after being exposed to high heat, and I can tell you there is no potency loss, and nothing to prove anywhere that there is any loss from small exposure to moderatly high temperatures, which is what the person I asked said. Its a "widly believed fact", aka a myth.
