Georgia boletus Identification request.
    #4524589 - 08/12/05 01:39 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Cap: 1-3 inches across.
Cap color: tan brown reddish.
stem is solid. Stem color: yellowish white with a little red.
Cap and stem stain blue within 10 seconds of cutting with knife.
Location: North Georgia
Gills: yellow

Print is WHITE!
Gills are yellow when you cut them open, but the thin outer layer is WHITE!

Flesh on the inside of the cap is more red, with white. No brown.

I've searched all over google and there is no Boletus I can find that matches that description. If you need more info let me know.

never heard of a bolete with white spores, some have yellowish spores though. I rarely bother to ID unknown boletes to species when I'm hunting, since the toxic species are relatively easy to rule out, based on bruising, cap and pore color: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/rules_for_boletes.html

in any case, the mushrooms in question shouldn't be eaten, on account of the bluing.

DH

It's really weird cause everywhere I go to says they should have olive or yellow spores and they are white. I mean straight up from Britain white... golf ball white, etc.
I really wish I had a camera... Oh well, I've got plenty of chanterelles to eat, I'm not going to risk on on this one even though it slightly smells like a king boletus.

OK, I found even more of the described mushroom here in North Atlanta Georgia. It can't be an un-named species because it's way too common! Check your lists experts, what boletus has WHITE SPORES! And tons of them, dead white in the sunlight. Bruises the yellowish olive brown when squeezed real hard on the cap and bruises blue/dark within 10 seconds when the stem is cut with a knife!!

WHAT IS THIS????! I can't find information anywhere.

If its fat its boletus satanis.

The only ones I see here(book) that resemble ur description and found in this region are boletus edulis and boletus subtomentous, niether of which are poisonous and used in cooking. The subtomentous stains blue when cut so thats probably ur mushroom.

MindAhead Are you serious?
Boletus satanis brueses blue in seconds has red net on the sterm and its deadly. Edulis doesnt have any red on its body and doesnt bruise, not sure about subtomentous. But as DH said that fast blue bruising is a reason not to be eaten.
There are boletes that slowly bruise blue or green and are yet edible, but that is slow and mostly on pressure bruise, not fast.
