Seeking Modem Advice
    #4524111 - 08/12/05 12:11 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I have a Lucent 56K that recently went kaput after a pretty decent run, and am looking for something modestly priced that you guys in S&T would recommend. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
~Che

Go with cable, It's fuckin awesome. I have 4 meg with a moterola surfboard external modem. It's pretty cheap and zips through anything.

Fuck that, I say go with an OC192 line. Ever since I had that put in the office I've been downloading porn at unbelievable rates.

My only recommendation is to avoid what they call a "win modem". A modem consists of two basic parts, an analog to digital converter (ADC) and a digital signal processor (DSP). The ADC converts the tones on the phone line into digital data. The DSP takes the stream of digital data and converts it into "words" that the computer can understand. In a "win modem" they have removed the DSP from the modem (to save a few dollars) and moved the functionality of the DSP into the OS.

There are two major problems with this design. First, your OS must have a complex, and often proprietary driver. This is fine if you are running windows, but no other OS will be able to use the modem. Second, your computer must spend a lot of CPU time doing the job of the DSP. If you are doing anything else, such as listening to music or encoding a movie, the modem will continue to hang up on you because it isn't getting enough CPU time (or the music will start to stutter, etc).

Thanks for all of the replies. All I really need is a 56K (anything else in the system I have would be overkill). I believe my old modem did all of its own DSP work. I kind of liked it like that, and now I know what to watch out for. Thank you.

I would recommend either one of these modems they are US Robotics
USR5610B Performance Pro Modem (V.92)
3CP5610A Performance Pro Modem (V.90)
These are hardware controller modems.
I use these in my computers & they outperform any win modems that I have tried in my computers.
They cost more money but in my opinion they are worth it.
The V.90 version is discontinued but you may find one on ebay cheap
