Why are Muscaria yin? They can give power and strength, one reason why the vikings ate them and went beserk on all those villages.

I would argue that alcohol is yang. It's pungent, belonging to metal in the five elements formula. Different alcohol preparations have their own subtleties. Wheat beer, for instance, is on the cooler (but still warm) side of alcohol's spectrum, while high proof liquor is very hot.

Alcohol acts to relax a tense liver, which TCM believes to cause internal heat. The fact that alcohol, specifically wheat beer, relaxes the liver might cause one to believe it is more yin. But according to the tcm model, the metal of the alcohol is cutting the wood of the liver in the control cycle. In other words, it is forcefully breaking up constrained chi... a very yang activity.

Common white ginseng (ie, Korean White) is very yang indeed... In fact is is considered the most yang of the commonly available ginsengs. The color of ginseng is a result of the curing process. White ginsengs are usually simply preserved/dried without any additives. Red ginsengs are steamed with various combinations of supportive herbs that shape and tame the effect of ginseng. The process results in the reddish color of the treated root.

American ginseng is most commonly available in the unprocessed (white) form but is much less yang (it's a diffrent species actually,) than Korean white. But it is still considered a yang herb. Its thermal effect on the body is simply more on the cool side.
