Kids being jailed in the Phillipines in violation of U.N.
    #4521418 - 08/11/05 08:38 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

From http://www.itv.com/news/index_386605.html

ITV News has revealed that children as young as nine years old are languishing in filthy jails in the Philippines

In a special report, ITV News presenter Chris Rogers, travelled to Manilla and witnessed shocking scenes of young children, accused of petty crimes like theft, packed into overcrowded cells in filthy conditions.

The children are forced to share crammed cells with adults, some of them pedophiles, in a desperately unhygienic environment.

There are too few social workers available to help or rehabilitate the children and they often learn more extreme criminal behaviour from their adult cell mates as a result.

One 13 year old called Edwin has spent four months in an horrific prison in the country's capital, Manilla.

He is locked up with murderers and pedophiles and yet he is accused of stealing a necklace. He is still awaiting trial.

Not surprising. Third World countries are often not very fun places.

At least the U.N. is doing what it can to help, and people bash the U.N. all the time.

Let me guess...the UN is going to write a very "stern" letter to the Phillipines expressing their displeasure.  :smirk:

At least they're doing something. Whether you admit it or not, the U.N. upholds a standard of human and children's rights that all countries must obey or face punishment or sanction. While alot of controversy comes into the picture in regard to the U.N. and its relations with the United States and the wars she wages, without the UN there would be no standard of human rights. If there was no U.N., the Phillipines would not be in violation of international law by throwing street kids in jail with a bunch of pedophiles.

If The UN is so good at upholding human rights, what did it do when mass genocide hit Rwanda (half a million killed)? What did it do in Sudan when the Arab militias went around killing people? What does it do to punish regimes like Saudi Arabia or Egypt that routinely arrest and torture people? When China throws political dissidents into prison, does the UN do anything?

They issue "strong condemnations" and "stern letters of disapproval". Translated into English: They don't hardly do shit.

The U.N is big brother, and should be stopped as soon as possible.

Do I get a hell yeah my fellow 1984'ers?

What do you suggest they do? Unless someone else is there waiting to do what the U.N. cannot, it is unfair to nit pick at the UN. At least the idea of U.N. places a reality of an international community with international input. There will always be a UN as long as a standard of human rights exists.

It is not unfair to nitpick the UN. If their job is to protect human rights, I suggest they stop fucking around and do it.

I think that the world media is too busy focusing on how the EvilUnitedStates of Imperialistica have 1200 terrorists-to-be at Gitmo and the allegations of mistreatment by people who want to destroy our society.

As you read the list, you'll see why we have a problem. The UN's stance of open-mindedness to allowing nations on their HRC that are in massive violations of human rights leads to things like this. If their were a vote, how many of these countries would be in a position to vote again child imprisonment with a clear conscience? Against slave labor? Genocide? Hardly any. The UN needs to realize, or we need to leave the UN, that sometimes you can't let a group of bad people judge other bad people.

Don't you know the U.N slogans?

"There are no threats, there will always be no threats"

"Terrorists do not exist, they have never existed"
