Is it feasable to turn agar into an LC. And what would be the plate:liquid ratio. Thanx.

Sure you can. It just turns it into a slurry. One plate to a pint of sterilized water is a decent ratio.

Can I use that to knock up a substrate, or is it better suited to make more LC's?

Just want to add that I would prefer using a LM rather than pure water to blend the agar in, then let it grow for 2-4 days before shooting. This is the method discussed in GG&MM, and stamets reports improved performance over just blending the agar and shooting it.
Not that just blending agar doesn't work though....

I agree with that. As, the more myc, the merrier with LC's.

Not just more, but also actively growing in three dimensions rather than just two...

I'm sorry im not sure I know what LM is. Do you mean add the plate to a nutrient solution (i.e. karo) as opposed to plain water?

Yeah, LM is Liquid Media. Honey, Karo, dextrose, Malt extract, peptone, nutritional yeast etc are all nutrients used in LM recipes.

Would you consider any of these better than the others for any specific reason?

Well honey is very easy to find, you can get clear honey which will have very little sediment when sterilized. Honey is also has natural anti-bacterial properties.
Karo is nice and clear, easily got in the US. The clearness allows you to spot contams easier.

I just knocked up a couple karo solutions w/ Shiitake and Oyster. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. Thanx for all the suggestions.

Well cool, but just for the record, I like dextrose (clear as a bell and has none of the unneeded stuff in karo), if you are going to shoot it just as soon as it's colonized. If clarity doesn't matter, I like dextrose with a little nutritional yeast. I've also seen great results mixing light malt extract with dextrose 50/50.
Whatever you use you usually want your sugar concentration around 4%.
Good luck.

I've been using dextrose/light malt extract with great results. I just brew 10g dextrose and 10g light malt extract in 500 to 700 mls of RO water by putting the dry components in a coffee filter and letting the coffee machine make the 500ml brew. Then I pour the brew in a quart jar (adding the stir magnet covered with a small section of cushion rubber tubing) and cover with a metal lid and filter patch and metal band over it all. The metal lid has an offset large hole covered with medical cloth tape (the stuff you wrap ankles with and stuff). I pressure cook the whole thing for 20 minutes, then inject a couple or few CCs of spores or liquid culture into the jar through the cloth tape, quickly replacing the filter lid immediately after I pull out the needle (this is done in my kitchen which is not clean). I constant stir with a stirrer at about 200-500 RPM for a week. The resulting culture is very thick and develops fast. In one week it was far thicker--maybe three times as dense--than the liquid culture I got from spore works for my Shiitake, for example. I've done Shiitake, cubes, and Stipticus Panellus (glowing wood lover) this way and all grew out very dense and fast. Of course cubes grow the very fastest (like 4 to 5 days to a very dense culture if temp is controlled around 85F). If I added a pinch of hardwood sawdust to my wood lover LCs, they'd probably do just as well as the cubes but I like the clarity.
When I say fast here is what I mean: below is a picture of a cube LC after about 3.5 days of constant stir started with a single milliliter (1cc) of liquid culture (this is about half as dense as I would rather use it at 5 days):

WoW, pretty impressive. BTW my LC's turned out OK. Took about three weeks and there nowhere as thick as that. Oh well, definet room for improvement. A stir plate and dextrose just moved a little further up my prority list.

when shooting for 4% mixure of sugar to water for LC do you mean 4% by volume? weight?
