Thoreau is one of my favorite philosophers, though he is largely known for his writings on nature, 'On the Duty of Civil Disobedience' is a seminal work of political philosophy. It's influence can be seen in the lives and works of Gandhi, Leo Tolstoy, and Martin Luther King Jr. When I read it (over twenty years ago), Thoreau's words and reasoning prompted me to make a major change in the direction of my life. I am forever indebted to him.

Thoreau definately put out some good shit. I've read Walden and a lot of his essays. The man had a supreme intellect and an admirable love of freedom and nature.

I've been to Walden Pond in Mass. twice. It really is a gem of a place.

I remember reading some of Walden in high school. What writings of Thoreau would you recommend that are worth buying.

Walden is recognized as his "masterwork". The short essay "Civil Disobedience" is a classic as well. Some of his other stuff includes the "A Plea for Captain John Brown" essay and a lot of his personal journal writings. If you like Thoreau you should also check out Ralph Waldo Emerson. They knew each other and are both recognized as being great American writers and thinkers.
