Correlation does not equal causation. An example: We see that the wiping out of the Plains Indians correlates with a decline in buffalo populations. Was the demise of the Plains Indians, the cause of the decline of the buffalo population?

It is a scientific fact that the moon orbits the earth. There are a few others. You can probably think of some yourself.

> It is a scientific fact that the moon orbits the earth

Again, "scientific fact" is a meaningless combination of words. It is a common knowledge that the moon orbits the earth (which doesn't mean that it is true). For there to be "science" involved, I need a hypothesis and a statement of finding that relates observation(s) in an independenly verifiable manner to the hypothesis given. Science follows the scientific method, period. If we ignore the methodology behind science, then we can no longer use the word science to qualify our statements. The motion of the moon orbiting the earth is governed by a scientific law. This is the closest you will be able to get to a "scientific fact" that the moon orbits the earth.

Whatever you say pal. Pointless hairsplitting is useless. You have essentially stripped the word "fact" of all meaning except as a defining description. Nonsense. Because of this assinine position you are forced to question that the moon orbits the earth, which is a worthless endeavor. When a concept crashes against reality it is probably best to abandon the concept and not the reality.

he is merely defending the notion that just because people think its true doesn't make it. he is also showing how the scientific world works, another thing that is a mystery to the layman. go back to 300AD and see how many people think the world is flat. then ask them if it is common knowledge that the world is flat. its not pointless hairsplitting its correcting the misuse of a phrase, the correction of common myths is one of the many things that this forum is good at. as well as being one of its primary functions.

I disagree. Even in 200 AD they knew what the lunar cycles were. They made calenders based on them. The cycles of the moon were and are facts. To deny them is to remove all meaning from the word "fact". Which is, as I said, useless and assinine.

Seuss specifically stated he was speaking about the phrase "scientific fact".

Which thing I say exists, as per my example. As are scientific data. The data constitute a body of observed facts.

hmm. well i was just guesstimating, but yes it would appear that my guesstimate was not exactly close. according to my google found source ( http://www.ethicalatheist.com/docs/flat_earth_myth_ch5.html ) the first mentionings of a spherical earth surfaced circa 500BCE with the theory of a spherical earth being advanced and predominent circa 165BCE.
well now we all know.

> Even in 200 AD they knew what the lunar cycles were

Yep, with the sun at the center of the universe and the planets orbit the sun in perfect circular orbits with the stars being pinholes in the night. People were burned alive for doubting these "facts". My point is that science is never certain. In science, there is always a margin for uncertainty and error. If a scientist calls something a fact, then that person has abandoned science for some other belief system. I am as certain as I can be that the moon orbits the earth... so certain that I don't give it any thought... but as a scientist, I cannot claim with 100% certainty (i.e fact) that the moon does indeed orbit the earth. As you point out, it is indeed a fine line, and rather silly, but it also a very important point when understanding the difference between science and perception.
