UV-C contaminant control
    #4518897 - 08/10/05 06:26 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

so, UV-C lights are used in household air purifiers to kill airborn bacteria and other microbes, does anyone have any experience using one of these to keep things sterile? i was thinking a uvc light might be useful to kill off those surface living molds which never seem to go away, without really damaging the mushroom body below the surface. anyone think this would work?

UV-C lights must be enclosed in a metal housing, otherwise they can have very HARMFULL effects. Best use is in a sheetmetal air duct, with a good air filter & fan pushing - or pulling air the ductwork.

Open exposure can cause blindness & skin cancer.

And it will damage a mushroom body and mycelium..

In addition, mushroom mycelium does an excellent job protecting itself. It's uncolonized grains and agar that needs to be protected, thus sterile procedure prior to full colonization. That's easily accomplished with gloveboxes and flowhoods.

Well if your wanting a way to remove mold and bacteria in air exchage you can buy hepa filter units from home depot and walmart that have a uv light built into them.I bought a unit with one and mounted it to the lid of a 190liter plastic tote. It now serves as my flow hood.

this is a good one to get...

I also have a small hand held one that I use to make sure all of my work areas are clean, it works very well, but it's not safe, so I have to wear a face mask that i picked up for 55$. It takes a few seconds to make sure everything is killed...
if you get the right gear to wear, i would so go with getting one, just be careful and yes it will kill the stuff you are trying to grow!

I have used UVC in my air handler for a while, and it is wonderful...for recirculated air, I have tried electrostatic, hepa, you name it...with uvc, it doesn't remove particles, but it kills them...everything else clogs with spores so quickly. I strongly recommend UVC...If you set it up right, it has something like a 99.9% kill ratio on one pass...

I have seen pro air cleaning units that use the UV light to clean as well as the hepa filter for mission critical labs, etc.
