Sometime during the spring I decided to put this plant outside in the garden to see how it would do. It was very scrawny and I thought it would probably die quickly. The week after I planted it we ended up getting a few days of freezing temperatures. Some of the leaves turned dark and fell off, I thought the plant had died. I left it in the ground to see if it would bounce back and it did. I have only watered it once - the first day that I planted it. The plants that I grow inside are not nearly as healthy as this one.
Here's how it looks today:
The sad part is that this plant will still be in the ground when winter comes and it will die. I'm moving to Vancouver on the 22nd of August. I would gladly let someone take this plant off my hands if we are able to meet up somewhere. So, if you live even a few hours from me maybe we can work something out. Send me a PM and we'll talk. I'd like for her to go to a good home. thanks

Nice, thanks for sharing! Just take a cutting and try to plant it at the new place, where the climate might be a little more forgiving.

I would love to be able to take some plants with me, but I am moving across the country to BC and I will have no room in my car for them. Also, I will be crossing the border and driving through the U.S. to get there - I'm not sure if they will let me cross with various plants in my vehicle.

Salvia isnt controlled, you should be fine moving it if you can find room.

Yeah, you might get hassled by the fuzz, driving across the U.S. with big leafy plants in your car (I know my long-haired hippy self would get hassled). But if you had a U-Haul, you might not attract attention. But you may be right about crossing the border, there might be soil-borne diseases in your plants that Canada doesn't want. Maybe give them to a buddy, who will keep them healthy and when you are settled in BC, he will send you some cuttings in the post.

I'm not surprised that it liked being out in the soil. I have found that salvia likes plenty of room for its roots. I had a really sick looking salvia in a pot which I was anxious to keep alive since it was my last plant but it didn't get any better. I tried more water, less water, more light, less light, I tried everything, and nothing helped. Then I put it into a bigger pot, and it is thriving .

I would suggest taking cuttings, and if not taking a cutting with you, then giving them away.
