Why Not Use A Microwave?
    #4516277 - 08/09/05 10:08 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Ok, this is my first post here, so hello every body...

First off I know a damn good ammount about mycology (I'm currently developing a method of cultivating Amanita muscaria in the household, and everything is goin good so far), but alass I cant find diddly squat about using microwaves for sterilizing growing media.
Is there a major no no Im forgetting about or something?
Seeing as how people sterilize spore containers ect in the microwave, why not some soaked bird seed??
Ive never grown cubies before, but the method Im goin to use is with ziplock bags full of wet straw w/ yeast extract and the way I was goin to sterilize was with my pressure cooker ($5 yardsale), and I was going to quickly put masking tape over the puncture wound on teh bag from my needle. (check filedonkey for the full thing)
But if I can just use the microwave, it would definately make things easier.
So once again is there anything wrong with doing that? Does it work? Anybody experianced w/ it?

Thanks a bundle!

PS sorry for ranting so long....

Because it doesnt keep water well, and doesnt hold heat well, and doesnt do it for extended periods of time, and is just a pain in the ass compared to a PC. When you dont find information on something, generally its for a reason.

Ok I see what you sayin, it's just that I thought the microwave had much higher temps than a PC, so I figured it could eliminate the bacteria/spores quicker, say 5-10 min?
Whatever, no biggy.
Thanks for the help!

And to totally change subjects, would any body be interested in buying an Amanita muscaria grow kit if it were available?
The project is going well, and I want to know if it would be worth trying to market or not. (if all works out)
I could atleast sell them in bulk to ethnobotany suppliers maybe...
I dunno, whatta you guys think?

Amanita's grow from the root system of a tree.

how are you going to try and copy that?

Well, the reason they grow from specific tree roots is because they absorb specific nutrients from the root, that the root is absorbing from the ground.
Ive already gotten great mycelial growth with simple sterilized root juice from a birch tree and a few other components.
But my method of inoculation in bonsai trees will remain secret for a while.

But the the bonsai tree thing is kinda obvious, ineficiant, and takes a long time.
Im currently working on an artificial root. The only problem is that the current design requires once a week watering and twice a week fertilisation. :/
Shit, I think what I stumbled apon is pure luck, because Ive been monitoring mycelia growth on a bonsai birch (wont say what kind) and its absolutely incredible.
OK im done ranting for this post
EDIT:
Forogot to mention, I managed to get one reasonably sized A muscaria var formosa form a bonzai eastern hemlock, using my inoculation method that will remain secret.

Actually gurl, dont feel discouraged. You can sterilize with a microwave.Thats how I will be sterilizing my substrate mix.All you have to do is put it in a casserole dish, cover with plastic wrap and nuke for 5 min.By covering with plastic wrap, You are keeping in the heat and moisture. And no, the wrap will NOT melt. Also, If you want to, after it cools, you could inoculate right thru the plastic and tape over the injection sites. But only if you want to case the mix. :supershroom:

Mikrowave - 100?C Spores are still happy at this temp if ur unlucky
PC - 121?C Spores cant stand 121?C for long....

Why do u guys think that there r autoclaves(PC) in all the micorbiology labs around the world and not just microwaves....

Ahaaaaaaaa. My Lady, To let u know, You can use a microwave to sterlize your mix. Joshua(holoman) himself stated that he does it.I quote now:

how do you sterilize the casing mix?

"I place the proper mix into quart jars with Tyvek filtered lids. I pour filtered water over the casing mix so the mix is a bit on the wet side. I then microwave the jars for at least 2 x 10 minutes. Sometimes I will pressure cook the jars." So there you go sweety, Nuke away!!!

To sterilize CASING MIX. Not bird seed. So no, there you dont go, dont nuke away.
