Is going online a waste of time?
    #4516879 - 08/10/05 03:09 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Unless you're doing research or working online, do you think general websurfing/chatting is a waste of time?
IS going online a waste of time?
You may choose only one
Yes, it's a huge waste of time and distracts me from other, more important things.
Yes, it's a huge waste of time but I don't have anything better to do.
No, it's necessary and I can multitask.
No, going online to surf and chat is what I look forward to.

Going online is an incredible honor really....it's like a vast web of knowledge and information and endless different people to communicate with...IMO

Eh... I'm in the middle. It's not necessary but it's not a waste of time either.

There's so much to learn and do. I could spend all day just listening to mp3s and reading random stuff on Wikipedia.

During the summer I've noticed that I spend a LOT less time online. During school, I spend a ton of time on the net procrastinating studying. Not a way to do well in college.

I'm hoping my lack of interest in the internet during the summer extends into the school year this semester. Huge distraction. Damn my lack of motivation.

A lot of people'll say that the internet provides a lot of knowledge, promotes freedom, opens contact with strangers...all that stuff. It might be true to some extent, but these are used as defenses of why-it's-ok that I use the internet. It's like talking to a defensive zombie when you hear it. It's wise just to brush off such thought-dust. These people are not using the internet because they really want to, they don't have a free relationship to it; being online is a neurotic or ideologicl behavior for them. It's like constantly smoking or eating or talking or jacking off to avoid just being there. As a few people above said---they use it to procrastinate, while others use it because they "should" because internet "is direct democracy" or "internet is where the real battle is fought" (I've even heard people say they live on the internet, what they didn't say is why--why being because they moved from a big city to a little hick town that they didn't like).

I think the internet is great for researching, reading and sometimes coming into contact with others (yet most of the people I've met from the internet are really trite). I'm sure there are thousands of other great things about being online.

But internet brings with it a world. It makes new ways of seeing things and limits other ways of seeing things. Like any technology it is not neutral and cannot be used for 'good' or 'evil' just in the right hands. I think also that internet prevents us from much spontaneity. It prevents one from doing shit, quite simply. Like going down to the well and fetching your water (instead of ordering it online), or making your bong (instead of ordering it online), or playing a song on a lute (instead of webradio). For all the time you spend chatting on line and babbling and even being frustrated or tired or depressed why couldn't you have done that to a person that is in your environment? Each time someone sits down at the internet they put themselves in a position that involves basically sitting still and allowing for no unexpected social or physical things to happen. Veritably internet separates people from others and themselves.

Internet's not a waste of time, but I don't think it's the most honest or authentic activity to be involved in.

Its less of a waste of time than some other things, say watching TV.

Going online is such a horrible habit. I've got to kick it!!! I wasted hours today... I'm going to limit myself to 1 hour/day.

It does distract me from more important things, but if it wasn't there to distract me, TV would distract me instead. I wouldn't consider it a complete waste of time, as I enjoy it, and have learned lots of cool things here, but it does get in the way a lot.
