Firewall problems...
    #4516367 - 08/09/05 10:24 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I need simple guidance setting up Norton Personal firewall on a friends computer. I must be missing something. When it's enabled, I have zero connectivity to the internet. It's connected through a Linksys router, the local IP is 192.168.1.100 and subnet is 255.255.255.0. When I run the Home Network Wizard in Norton, it detects the network adapter and configures it to set 192.168.1.0 & subnet 255.255.255.0 in the "Trusted Zone" to allow full connectivity, but it still does not allow me to connect. I tried adding my own IP with the same subnet to no avail.

Anyone have any advice? Everything looks good in the system rules.

Throw nortons in the bin. Downlaod the free version of zone alarm.

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

Cracks for the full version are easy to find but the free version will kick nortons in the ass anyway.

Everything nortons make is shit.

Yeah, windows firewall is off. I actually had quite a few problems with Zone Alarm on my last computer, it worked great for a while then suddenly started giving me problems. Whenever I logged on, it would give me the config wizard/tutorial screen every time, and it was impossible to uninstall/reinstall so I said screw it.

anyways, isn't cracking a firewall just asking for trouble? I always thought antivirus/firewall were the things you just don't pirate, I mean obviously you wouldn't be able to download important updates from their server without blowing your cover and ?rendering the software unusable? please fill me in because if thats not the case I'll consider that option.

but for now, anyone else have any suggestions? FWIW in the Connection Properties from Control Panel, "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network" is turned on, I'm assuming it should remain this way, but I thought I'd throw that out there.

I also put the two DNS servers in the trusted zone, but still nothing.

Isn't that your problem right there? Try adding the range 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.255 to your "Trusted Zone".

And just for the record, are you sure it's 192.168.1.x and not 192.168.0.x? At least in Europe, 192.168.1.x is extremely unusual.

yeah its 192.168.1.x here.

I think 192.168.1.0 covers the range you speak of, but I tried anyway and still no luck. :|

Norton sucks major balls. Uninstall it.

When I read the title of this thread I thought to myself Firewall problems? must be norton or mcaffee.
