Fat Man - Nagasaki and Jerry Garcia
    #4516200 - 08/09/05 11:54 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

August 9th always brings up these associations for me: It is the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan (today is the 60th anniversary) and it is the anniversary of Jerry Garcia's death (today is 10 years). Additionally, the code name for the almost spherical, implosion-type Plutonium bomb design dropped on the Japanese city was named 'Fat Man.' Weirdly enough, Jerry was, later in life, affectionately named the 'Fat Man.' Both dropped on August 9th (1945 and 1995 respectively).

...and I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight...

Did you ever see that show where they did this with Lincoln and JFK. It was eerie how many coincidences as such were between their lives. They had over a hundred like that.

Sweet Dreams

Yes, I have read some of those coincidences. Just too amazing. I think Swami made them up

(Thanks, I did have sweet dreams ).

There is absolutely nothing amazing about those "coincidences". It just reveals the enormous number of facts and nearly unlimited associations surrounding any complex event.

Don't get THAT started now. I agree with Swami about prefering acid to A-Bombs also.

Amazement is an emotion, and I am self-reporting an emotion if you don't mind. Amazement registers when patterns, coincidences, symmetries emerge from the "buzzing, blooming confusion" of life (in William James' words). Sorry this doesn't happen to you, but your take seems to be that there are NO connections, NO constellations of psychic and physical coincidence (i.e., synchronicities), and perhaps no synthesis of meaning in life. I'm way too Jungian and B-Cognizing to entertain that. In fact, just studying one-celled life was enough to "occasion" transcendental insight. Maybe that's just me.

I am merely aware as a mathematician, that with billions of associations possible, it would be amazing if something didn't match up.

That you assign cosmic significance to something that is a fact of large numbers doesn't mean there is one.

Did you see and enjoy the George C. Scott movie, "They Might Be Giants" (1971)? He thought he was Sherlock Holmes and saw clues everywhere.

Why do you use the phrase "cosmic significance" like its a bad thing?

What if the significance is nothing more then understanding relationships between elements of existence to learn more about the big (cosmic) picture from.

When a murder is committed, "Sherlock Holmes", investigators, first look to who the murder victim was closely related to, to solve the mystery. They follow trails of related clues and save them for evidence. Same with how Darwinism is working to discover the origins of humans.

Why don't you call that quest one with cosmic significance? It fits!

Delusion IS a bad thing. It prevents one from seeing what is.

How does that relate. No one formed an opinion here about anything.

No one said the similar facts of the bomb and garcia meant anything nore those between JFK and Lincoln.

No delusions were put forth here. However, with Darwisnism, people have it in there mind that something is there that hasn't been scientificall linked yet. THAT is entertaining delusions.

I'm not saying you have. Some have. And I just wonder why you don't point the criticsm in that direction. Your entitled to be selective with it.

It might be hard to know what delusion is.  Just because most people agree on something doesn't make it not delusional.  So it is pretty subjective in many cases.  One may not know they are being delusional while believing themselves to be immaculately sane.  Of course this does not apply to you or me Swami.

Many people drew AMAZING links between the Luxor Valley and the Great Pyramids with the "City of Cydonia" on Mars. Naturally, it was all total nonsense.

This type of association is the basis of Numerology, which likewise carries no inherent meaning.

When a murder is committed, "Sherlock Holmes", investigators, first look to who the murder victim was closely related to, to solve the mystery. They follow trails of related clues and save them for evidence.

There is a world of difference bewteen a detective finding a clue associated with the victim or a suspect, and reading a random passage in a book and using that to point one in the direction of the perpetrator.
