installed Windows today

I was itching to get back to using Cubase so I decided to wipe my hard disk and install Windows XP today. This time I remembered to partition half the drive for reinstalling Linux later on.
The first thing I thought when I booted into Windows was "goddamn this shit is ugly!" Compared to Ubuntu, Windows looks straight up UGLY. The fonts are all pixelated, and the GUI lacks detail and customization. When I realized there were absolutely no programs installed, I was sorely missing the Debian package system. I had to actually go to web sites to download each and every program I needed. What an idiotic and archaic process, totally inconvenient and impractical. I still can't believe I had to go on the internet and download a program just to open .zip files! And then I -- ewww Internet Explorer -- had to download Firefox before even downloading anything else.
So I end up getting everything installed, and start browsing some other sites. Within an hour (I kid you not) I'm already infested with spyware! As of now I'm still trying to remove stuff that the best spyware removal programs didn't find. ARRRRRRGH!
On the upside Windows does boot up super quick. But that's about it.
Thanks for your quality products, Microsoft.

That spyware is probably coming through MS Messenger. It's pure crap. Disable it, if you can and get Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy.....

`apt-get install kernel-package && man make-kpkg' and you can solve that

cool I didn't even know about that. So if I understand this right, if you recompile the kernel you can remove useless drivers that load that you don't need, and therefore speed things up?

Yes; if you are running debian, I can with confidence tell you that newbiedoc: kernel-pkg will run you though how to recompile your kernel "the debian way". It *should* work on debian-based OSes (like ubuntu, knoppix, mepis) but there's no guarantees (nor is there any guarantee you will follow directions and NOT fuck your system up, just like when doing anything else under root.
The Debian NewbieDoc article I linked has you install the following packages:
Quote:
bash:~# apt-get install gcc kernel-package kernel-source-2.4.18 libc6-dev tk8.3 libncurses5-dev fakeroot
Make sure you have `build-essential' installed, as well. If you are installing any other kernel aside from "2.4.18", you will want to install ITS sources instead, replacing "2.4.18" with whatever your target version is.. You can list the current sources in the debian repositories you are on like so:
Quote:
merlincorey@bluemoon:~$ apt-cache search kernel-source-2.6 kernel-patch-debian-2.6.10 - Debian patches to Linux 2.6.10 kernel-patch-debian-2.6.11 - Debian patches to Linux 2.6.11 kernel-patch-debian-2.6.8 - Debian patches to Linux 2.6.8 kernel-source-2.6.10 - Linux kernel source for version 2.6.10 with Debian patches kernel-source-2.6.11 - Linux kernel source for version 2.6.11 with Debian patches kernel-source-2.6.8 - Linux kernel source for version 2.6.8 with Debian patches
There's my too much information for today

Well I used Spybot Search & Destroy and HijackThis to finally get rid of all the adware. I think I'm clean for now. I'm just gonna install linux again asap and use that for everything except doing music stuff.
delta thanks for the info. I was using Ubuntu and I'm probably gonna use that again, so this should hopefully work on that distro.
