Worth picking?

Me and my cousin were taking a walk and we found a patch of about 5 mushrooms. I looked at the bottom of the cap and it was white and spongy. Stem was white. I'm not sure if they're worth picking, so I'm asking here. They're in Orlando, Florida. I thought they might be cubes but I'm not so sure. I drew a picture in MSPaint. I broke the stem and it started turning purple, but then again we only looked at them for a minute or so. Are there similar magic shrooms? If so I'll take the effort of actually picking them. The biggest cap was the size of my hand. They were next to a tree.

if it has a sponge on the bottom i dont think its active, and its possibly inedible/poisonous, so dont eat it. Kind of a crappy description too, real pics help a lot more then just some random drawing in MSpaint. Im guessing bolete.

it was probably some kind of bolete, possibly poisonous. the spongy stuff on the bottom of the cap are pores if so.
cubes have gills and grow in cow pastures.

The picture you drew there looks like a rather young cubensis. Make sure that you pic some mature specimens. Do you mean spongy bottom of the cap or below the actual cap, where the gills would be? What was the exact habitat? I understand that they were growing under a tree but what exactly was the base of the stem coming out of? Check the spore print color.

The tree was growing on mulch, surrounded by grass. Anyway I'll pick one and take a spore print later. Thanks. Although it sounds like it's a bolete (edit: looked them up on google and can't find one that looks similar).

Definitely not a bolete if that is what they look like. Anyway I looked at the big one and it's NOT spongy, only the baby one was (assuming because it wasn't developed).

I posted that for the key and other info, not the picture. there are links to photos of the different species in the key.

Sounds to me like the veil wasnt broken yet on the small one, so you couldnt see the gills yet.
Pictures would be an awesome help here, and sporeprints would be just as great.
