THICK, PHAT CASING

Hello All,
Here is the situation - My buddy did a casing a while ago that was about 2 1/2 inches deep using the 50/50+. After about a week the whole thing was covered with mycelium. He had like five beautiful flushes and lived happily every after. He is now attempting a 4 inch casing with over an inch of 50/50+ on the top layer. Its been almost two weeks and the mycelium is just starting to peak out on two sides.
The big question of the day - Does he continue to incubate the casing in the dark until its covered with mycelium, or can he induce fruiting when the mycelium is still under the surface of the casing?
Oh what tangled webs of Mycelium we weave....Peace

2 1/2 inches is a bit thick. Four inches is way too thick for a casing layer unless you have twice that in substrate. You're making the mycelia work harder than necessary. How deep is your substrate?

insomnia i think he is saying the substrate was 2 1/2 inches and his casing was a little over an inch.. still too thick. can't you just keep the casing layer around 1/2 an inch even for larger casings?

A 1/2 inch is all you need.

he was talking about the substrate level, not the top casing layer...1 inch is about as thick as you should ever go with the top layer...
4 inches is about the max on the substrate level...
from what experts here tell me (Anno), you should wait until you see about 20% mycelium before you start feeding them light and initiate pinning. so not very much, only a little white stuff is ideal.

Sorry folks -- I guess I misunderstood. I usually rock 1/2" or less. The thinnest I've ever gone is 1/4". Any more than 1/2" or so and you're wasting time. Thicker casings might help promote larger fruits, but you'll get fewer mushrooms. They also support more flushes, but then again, you can patch a thinner casing after each flush for the same results.
