how thick to case??
    #4514864 - 08/09/05 05:19 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

i have a window planter box that is 100% colonized and horse poo is the substrate. i haven't cased yet but the mycelium is about 5 inches deep. i will be casing with jiffy mix. how think should i make the casing layer?? i'm planning on large fruits so i need something that will support the weight but not stop them from breaking through.

I wouldn't use Jiffy mix...but you can.

3/4" to 1" thick would be a good casing layer for you.

When in doubt, make it thinner, than thicker.

use 50/50 plus casing

or use the 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir casing.

---

Sounds like you have most of the stuff for the 50/50 plus

go with that.

Your going to need more than just crushed shell, for effectively buffering the PH in the short term. Crushed Oyster shell has a low solubility in water but will work in the long term to continuously buffer, and it will make the texture of the casing airy which will help with the mycelium running through the casing, as well as making harvesting less damaging to the casing layer. I recommend that you buy some oyster shell flour (or grind it yourself) mix with water, and hydrate your casings with that. The only was to REALLY know if your buffer has brought the PH of the peat to a less trichodermin friendly environment of 6 or 7 is to use some paper PH test strips from walmart. Once you know how much buffer you need you won't even need them anymore.

so there is no other way to figure if the ph is ok without test strips? the 50/50+ tek says to use 15%... if i did that, would it be safe to say that it is at a good ph?

I think the consensus is that 15% ph buffer is way too much. Someone wanna jump in here . . .
